christmas decorations?

boyohboyohboy wrote: most of my neighborhood put out christmas decorations this weekend!
they decorated the houses with lights, the trees in the yard and the fences with red bows.
My husband wanted to follow suite, but I said its to early.
I mean for sure with things they way they are in the economy lately, and the likely hood that christmas is going to be small this year...I could use some of the christmas cheer early..but it just seems to early. I dont want to get sick of them before christmas ever gets here.

luvmykids replied: A few of our neighbors have started too, I'm glad because we're 99% sure we're moving over Christmas break so I won't be doing any decorating. I don't think I could get sick of Christmas, but I don't usually start until the day after Thanksgiving.

lisar replied: i think its still a little early for that. But I love to look at them

PrairieMom replied: Ours put them up 2 weeks ago. BUT, everyone does it in October here, because by December it is snowy, and freezing. It gets to be to dangerous to put them up. So, they put them up, but don't turn them on until later.
We, on the other hand, will not be putting up lights, in an effort to reduce our energy cost and carbon footprint. laugh.gif my poor deprived children. rolling_smile.gif

msoulz replied: Holy cow!!

We try to get ours up the weekend after Thanksgiving as it is a long weekend and too cold to do anything else! tongue.gif

ETA that is probably why the neighbors did it this weekend, it's probably the last nice weekend until April!

jem0622 replied: does it get cold where you are? here it does...so folks tend to decorate before it gets cold. that way they can flip a switch when it's appropriate. however, they don't put out red ribbons/wreaths. just the lights on the gutters/trees/etc.

CantWait replied: Personally I think putting out any Christmas decorations before Remembrance / Vetrans Day is a disrespect to those who lost their lives in past wars or are currently serving their nation.

It actually disgusts me!!! soapbox.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: We usually put ours up the weekend after Thanksgiving. The downtown area near where we live already put their wreaths up on all the posts even before Halloween. rolleyes.gif For me it's a little early, but I have seen some decorations out already. We personally live in a colder climate, but the climate between now and Thanksgiving isn't going to change much. It's in the 30's-40's here right now, and we've had some snow as well.

I will have to admit...I've already listened to some Christmas music though. blush.gif

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
Thats how it is around here, the lights go up while its steal nice out. We dont do lights or anything outside at our house though. Just a wreath on the door...and we make wreaths on Thanksgiving at my dad's, after we eat. Its tradition!!
We will get our decorations out Thanksgiving weekend.

Mommy2Isabella replied: We don't do any Christmas decorating until after Thanksgiving. It doesn't get very cold here ... around 20 something but sometimes we don't even get that cold.

We did notice that Christmas decor is already out in full swing, and places are already putting out their Christmas toy books and such! We are already done Christmas shopping for the kids because they have had sales on the things we were looking for and I am SURELY not fighting day after thanksgiving rush ...

HuskerMom replied: I don't care how cold it is, we wait til after Thanksgiving to put up Christmas decorations. tongue.gif

Nina J replied: We don't put ours up until December 1st, or after. I was always told putting your decorations up before December meant you'd have bad luck over Christmas.

Really though, December for me means Christmas, so I don't put decorations up until December. I like looking at them though. It never really feels like Christmas until December for me.

nonconformist replied:
What if the person that decides to put up decorations before Rememberance Day doesn't realize that it is inappropriate to do so?

What is it about putting up decorations before Remeberance Day that makes it a disrespectful act? dunno.gif

CantWait replied:
Because Remembrance Day is for the act of Remembrance, not for Christmas, plain and simple. You have a whole 6 weeks or so after Nov. 11 to celebrate Christmas, yet we accomidate only one day a year to honor your Vets and those soldiers that are currently serving overseas.

nonconformist replied:
I can appreciate those that fought for my freedom with a Christmas tree in the corner of my living room.

It makes no sense. I'm not trying to disrespect anyone.

CantWait replied:
Well that's what's so great about PC, we all are entitled to our own opinions.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Me too. In fact, many people around here put up their Christmas tree early or keep it up year round because of that fact and in honor of them. Also, some families of soldiers overseas keep up their tree or put it up early because they do not know when they loved one is coming home, as well, and they have things waiting for them for when they do arrive home. Anyone who is fighting for our country knows how unrealistic it is that their loved one would be home FOR Christmas, so you have to work around it. Just some food for thought.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I don't put mine up until some time in December. Just because I get sick of it quick.. and it accumulates dust. yuck!

BAC'sMom replied: We wait till after Thanksgiving

stella6979 replied: We're not huge decorators, but I am excited to get the tree up this year. Avery is at such a fun age right now, so I'm more excited for her than anything. smile.gif

CantWait replied:

I'm surprised to hear a Christian say that people would use a Christmas as a time for soldiers, isn't Christmas suppose to remember when Jesus was born? I'm far from religious, but I do know the real reason Christmas is celebrated, and it's not for our country men and women.

[QUOTE=Boo&BugsMom,Nov 13 2008, 10:30 AM] [QUOTE=nonconformist,Nov 12 2008, 11:27 PM] I can Also, some families of soldiers overseas keep up their tree or put it up early because they do not know when they loved one is coming home, as well, and they have things waiting for them for when they do arrive home. I think myself ( a military wife) of all people would know this fact more then yourself or most others. I'm not talking about military families who have loved ones overseas, I'm talking about the general public who have nothing to do with the military.

Like I said, everyone has their own opinion, that is mine, I'm not debating it.

skinkybaby replied: Growing up a military brat who still has many, many, many relatives in the armed forces I can honestly say I've never heard anyone complain about that before.

Anyway, we put ours up after Thanksgiving. I LOVE Christmas decorations and sometimes it's hard to wait.

CantWait replied:
I never gave it much thought either up until this year when Remembrance Day brought on a whole new meaning for me.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
First of all, me being Christian has nothing to do with how other people use their trees. wink.gif I don't have any relatives overseas. Some people who do, keep their tree up so when their soldiers DO come home, they can celebrate Christmas when they arrive whether it be at Christmas or during the summer...it has nothing to do with being religious or using the tree in a 'blasphemous' way. I actually know many people who are Christians who don't even use a tree during Christmas, because of it's pagan link, and others who don't even celebrate Christmas on our 'set aside' day because that day (Dec 25th) isn't necessarily the exact day Christ was born...it's the day our world chose to set aside to celebrate it. wink.gif

The tree was originally used as a symbol of the Holy Trinity (this was a man-made symbol, the Bible says nothing about using a tree as far as I know), but nowadays many people use it as a simple tradition for Santa to put presents under. To be honest, I even knew someone who keeps their tree up year round because they feel it's intent (the Holy Trinity) should be celebrated year round, not just on Christmas Day. Everyone has their own convictions about it. wink.gif

Anyways, this was not my intention to blab about the meaning behind the Christmas tree, but want to point out that my religion or other people's religion has nothing to do with keeping up their tree for their solidier for when they arrive home. I never said they use Christmas time for their soldiers "in place" of the real meaning of Christmas...they simply keep their tree up until their soldier comes home to celebrate Christmas with them. Besides, we should be praying for them and remembering them on Christmas Day anyways, as with every day. The real meaning of Christmas is Christ, but part of that is also thinking of others at that time as well. wink.gif

CantWait replied:
As I said, I'm not talking about a military family who obviously has a reason for it (we've also had to celebrate early before), I'm speaking of the general public. I'm also not debating it, it's my opinion, I'm not trying to change everyone's opinion here, just stated mine.

PrairieMom replied: Just out of curiosity, is it generally excepted as being in poor taste or bad etiquette to put the tree up before veterans day? Like is it a actual rule? I have never heard of that before, but November 11 is pretty early to put up a tree anyway. IMO.

Calimama replied:
I had never heard of that either.. but then I miss most traditions. rolling_smile.gif

We don't put ours up until after Thanksgiving.

I'm thankful for what our vets have done for us every single day, having a Christmas tree up wouldn't make that day any less important for us IMO.

Boo&BugsMom replied:

I felt I needed to clarify. smile.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I have never heard of anything like that, and I know a lot of military vets and come from a long line of them myself...so does Troy's family.

PrairieMom replied:
We have many vets in our family too. Ben was asked to bring a picture of any family members he had that served / are serving, and we discovered, the Me, my DH, my Grandfather, and our grandmothers were the ONLY people in our entire family to not serve. laugh.gif It was really surprising to us. We just never thought about it like that. We have good excuses too. I have asthma, and Dh is blind in one eye so they wouldn't take us, and my grandpa's brother was disabled, to they wouldn't take my grandpa since he would have been the only Heir.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
They wouldn't take Troy either (Navy). He has way too many medical issues to list. laugh.gif

CantWait replied:
No not at all, and like I said, not that I've ever had my decorations up before December anyway, I just never thought about it till this year.

nonconformist replied:
....just stating your opinion and in the process, passing judgment on others.

Look, on Monday when we put our tree up, we had absolutely no idea that what we were doing would or could actually evoke 'disgust' in anyone. We were only trying to please our children.

Apparently shame on us.

ZandersMama replied:
3 posts on this site and all on this thread. stirring the pot anyone?dry.gif

I dont decorate until after December 1st usually, because the kids are hyped up enough as it is lol

nonconformist replied:
Just stirring the pot with some food for thought.

Trust me, I will leave now.....Merry Christmas to all.

ZandersMama replied: Merry Christmas!
