deceptively delicious

PrairieMom wrote: Any one have this cookbook yet? I am thinking about getting it to try to feed my kids healthier, but I don't know if it is worth it. What I would really like a few sample recipies

moped replied: Jerry Seinfelds wife? My SIL told me to go get it - I may...........

Let us know if you get it!

holley79 replied: Haven't even heard of it.

PrairieMom replied:
It was written by Jerry Seinfields wife, and it was featured on Oprah. She basically makes puree's of veggi's and puts them into her meals, so the kids will eat their vegetables with out even knowing it.
We don't eat enough vegi's so I was hoping this would be a easy way to eat a little healthier.

holley79 replied: Oh wow, that's a great idea. Annika is addicted to veggies and fruits so we don't have that problem. I don't though but force myself for her sake. emlaugh.gif

PrairieMom replied: Okay...DUH! Oprah has a website. rolleyes.gif

Here is a link to sample recipes.

http://www.oprah.com/foodhome/food/jseinfe...ipes_main.jhtml

Kaitlin'smom replied: we dont have enough varitey, well Kaitlin and I do but DH is so picky on his veggies. I would also be interested in tring this.

Jamison'smama replied: I have put this on my christmas list.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I have a few friends who sware by it. it would be good to sneak some veggies in on dh

ediep replied: I ordered this book the day she was on Oprah, but I haven't gotten it yet
I can't wait to get it

bawoodsmall replied:
Tara - I have mixed emotions about this one. I like the idea and have done it but then what about when you are at someone else's house and they wont eat their veggies. Emily loves to help in the kitchen so she would see me doing it. I just think it is better to explain to them how important it is. I guess unless you were doing both. Heck I dont know. I like the idea though.

Jamison'smama replied: She stresses the importance of putting the fresh vegetables on their plates as well as hiding it.

grapfruit replied: Cyndi bought this and I was reading it last night while they installed my phone at work.

It's really awesome! She says you ALWAYS offer fresh fruits and veggies. Gives tips on how to get kids to eat them too!

There's lots of info on the nutrianal (sp?) value of the different veggies and easy receipes.

A+!!!

amynicole21 replied: I don't have it, but will soon wink.gif A food processor is on my Christmas list this year.

momtoMegan&Alyxandria replied: I have it. What kind of recipes do you want to sample. They have Breakfast, mealtime and desserts. Most of them sound really yummy. And there are all kinds of tips and stuff too.

Here is an example of a mealtime one:

First page I flipped to was for Sloppy Joes:

1 tbs olive oil
1/2 c chopped red onion
1/2 c chopped celery
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb lean ground turkey or sirloin
1/2 c sweet potato puree
1/2 c butternut squash or red pepper puree
raw finely chopped carrots (optional)
1/2 c reduced fat low sodium beef broth
1/4 c tomato paste
1 tbs Worcestershire sause
1 tsp chili powder, or to taste
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
8 whole grain humburger or hotdog buns

1. put oil in nonstick pan add onoin, celery and garlic cook until onion starts to soften (not brown)
2. add meat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon cook until no longer pink
3. add vegetable purees and remaining ingredients. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer until the liquid is reduce by about one-half, 15-20 minutes
4. spoon mixture over buns

Tell me what your favorite food is and I will see if they have a recipe for it. Just remember most of them are american foods.

lisar replied: Okay I love the idea but they dont sound so good. Cauliflower in the scrambled eggs is enough to make me gag at the thought. I will go look at the book and see if there is anything else that might sound decent though.

PrairieMom replied:
well, you are supposed to still serve conventional veggis, so that the kids still learn to eat right, this is just supposed to be a way to insure that you get the vegetables into their little systems.

grapfruit replied:
Supposedly you can't even taste them! dunno.gif I'm going to try it though!!! I KNOW we don't eat enough veggies!

bawoodsmall replied:
Yeah maybe if I would have read further. Good idea. I am going to look on amazon to get it. There were a lot of ingredients in the sloppy joes though. I dont know if it would be to time consuming when I dont get off work till 5:00 or if it just looks time consuming kwim.

amynicole21 replied: Some of the things she mentions are dipping chicken strips in puree and then breading before baking them. Or putting the puree in with your spaghetti sauce. Not all of the ideas are as complicated as the sloppy joes one wink.gif

bawoodsmall replied:
Thats more my style. I am going to get it. I have a food processor so why not start using it. The kids are pretty good about the veggies but aiden is kinda picky about the fruits so ha ha they will be in something.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I have it! thumb.gif My MIL gave it to me as a gift last weekend. I haven't had too much time yet to read it in depth, but I've flipped through it and like how basic most of the recipes are. Now I love to cook, so I don't necessarily need easy, but when it comes to cooking for my kids, I want BASIC, but I also want nutritious. And I want it to be done in as little time as possible. My kids are ready to eat by 5pm, but since DH is usually home around 7pm, I'm making a dinner for them and a dinner for us. So I noticed she talks about freezing her purees, which I think is such a great idea and quick!

Anyway, I love the book for it's cute illustrations and commentary. She is funny just like Jerry! I also like that it has real photos of the food. I will never make it if I can't see how it "should" look. I read the intro and I liked how normal of a family they are, as in just like one of us. She cooks her kids food, not a nanny or an in-home chef, and she seems to have the same frustrations about getting her kids to eat veggies. She is a busy mom like all of us, so that was really neat to read.

I'm looking forward to making something from the book, especially the chicken nuggets! I'm happy to pass on any recipes....but don't have time today. PM me if anyone wants to swap! thumb.gif

jcc64 replied: I'm going to try the chicken nuggets tonight. I'll let you know how they turn out.

My2Beauties replied:
This sounds like an excellent book, I'd like to get it. Let us know how your chicken nuggets turn out Jeanne

moped replied: I do want it but don't want to spend the $$ on a big fancy processor.......

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
If you steam the vegetables until really soft, it works just as well in a regular blender Jen. wink.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Sam's Club has this book pretty cheap if anyone has one near them. wink.gif

I haven't bought it yet. I want to hear how some of you like the recipes.

PrairieMom replied:
OH! thanks for the tip! I was going to Sam's tomorrow anyway. thumb.gif

bawoodsmall replied:
Mine cost about $15.00. May be a cheapy but it works great for me.

luvmykids replied:
I don't have the cookbook but I have the Magic Bullet and it makes great purees! thumb.gif

jcc64 replied: Chix nuggets were very yummy. I made them with pureed broccoli, and it made the chicken nice and moist. Kids liked them, though Corey saw the green showing through the breading and balked a little bit at first. (she never eats anything anyway!) Boys loved them.
I don't have a food processor. I just threw the raw broccoli in my blender with a little bit of water and it worked fine.

A&A'smommy replied: I totally want to try it.... alyssa is a TERRIBLE eater and VERY hard to please.. she will eat fruit okay but veggies other than corn is a NO NO in her mind sleep.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: My kids love veggies luckily but I would LOVE to try this on my husband....do you think McDonald would hide some veggie puree in their big macs? tongue.gif

MoonMama replied: Its so funny that you posted this my mom was just telling me about it. They are sold out everywhere here, so she ordered her and I each a copy, they should be here the first week of Nov. But we'll see it soounds interesting thought and I'm dying to try some of it out.

PrairieMom replied:
There are a few recipies on Oprah's website, I am going to try those before I buy the book. I am going grocery shopping next tuesday, so I will let you all know how it turns out!

luvmykids replied: I don't think it was her recipe, but I've had brownies with spinach in them and honestly didn't know until someone told me thumb.gif

luvbug00 replied: LOL I used to do that to mya's dad because he REFUSES to eat veggies. REFUSES! Mya loves them..fortunately smile.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: I havent googled this to see if its true yet, but my dh told me that jessica seinfield is being sued over this cook book for plagerism. apparently there is another cook book out there with all the same stuff in it, and they say she took it word for word and chapter for chapter..
so maybe the other persons book would be cheaper?
sometimes its just the name that costs so much?
just thought i would pass that on.

gr33n3y3z replied: I hate the idea a big waste of money.
How are children suppose to eat here hide the flavor of everything with the taste of other foods?
Hide the food so they eat it?
Get out just make it and they have eat one or more.

amynicole21 replied:
It's for kids who won't eat veggies no matter what - like mine. You put them on their plate anyway, but hide them in the food so that they are at least getting some when they refuse to eat what's on their plate. My kids will throw up (literally) if I make them take a bite of veggies. rolleyes.gif

Jamison'smama replied:
Mine too---well Jama will sit all day and night and is willing to lose everything in order not to try new vegetables or fruit. We offered to buy her ANYTHING she wanted from Walmart if she tried a tiny piece of squash--she couldn't do it. (yes I have been known to bribe my kids to try things smile.gif )

Sorry Amy, I edited your post the first time instead of quoting it

PrairieMom replied:
Yeah, its true, I saw a thing about it on one of those morning shows.

I don't know how they can really sue her tho, the recipes aren't the same, its just the same idea, with similar illustrations and stuff. the other book was published 6 months ago. I looked for that one too, thinking that either one would be okay, but I couldn't find either one on the shelves.

gr33n3y3z replied:
I see what you mean but how are the kids going to learn to eat them? At an older age and when do you stop hiding it?
Thats all I'm saying to that and I agree its a good idea but when do you stop?
Are you still going to offer it at the table in another form?
I just dont people thought this out much and it may cause later problems.

PrairieMom replied:
you are still supposed to offer regular veggi's too. This is just to insure that they actually ingest them. wink.gif

As for me, I know that my family doesn't eat enough veggis, (me included) blush.gif so this is a way to get them. If I like the recipes, I would consider it a lifestyle change for us.

gr33n3y3z replied:
Ok good I'm glad the veggies are to be still offered thumb.gif I just never heard of this book until now

avory&samsmom replied: I love the book. I've been doing this with my kids since they started solids. Its a fantastic idea for kids who HATE broccoli, culiflower (sp?) and leavy veggies. My kids go ape for fruit but refuse veggies.

I give it FOUR thumbs up thumb.gif thumb.gif thumb.gif thumb.gif biggrin.gif

amynicole21 replied: I wonder if you could just use jarred baby veggies for convenience sake?

avory&samsmom replied:
I think it might be ok if it isn't full of preservatives and such. If it works let me know! I get tired of puree-ing everything! tongue.gif
