election results question

Boys r us wrote: I've been to MSNBC,Foxnews & CNN and all 3 of the sites have 3 different results as far as electoral votes..I don't understand?!?! Now I know these are just projected wins..but how are the results so different:

Example:

CNN shows Bush with 254 and Kerry with 252..not that big of a gap
Fox news shows Bush with 269 and Kerry with 242
MSNBC shows Bush with 269 and Kerry with 239

coasterqueen replied: Well I can tell you Fox is more Republican and NBC is more Democratic so the projections are somewhat persuaded by that. Not sure about CNN.

BTW, this is what DH told me last night. tongue.gif I was looking at NBC and he said "WHY are you looking at that...they are democratic....go to Fox. I said "OK" wacko.gif

alice&arik replied: I don't even know what the difference is between regular votes and electoral votes. blush.gif

5littleladies replied: I can tell you.

CNN won't give Bush Ohio even though everyone says his lead there (136,000) is insurmountable. However they have given Kerry Wisconsin with a lead of 14,000 and Bush Nevada with the same margin, but they won't call New Mexico or Iowa for Bush even though he leads in those states by 14,000 also.

Fox has given Bush Ohio but hasn't projected WI, IA, NM, and NV, presumably because they are all showing only the 14,000 lead for either candidate.

Msnbc is about the same as Fox except they haven't given New Hampshire to anyone, a state that Fox has given to Kerry.

I know that is kind of complicated, but hopefully kind of understandable. I was up until past 2 watching the returns on all of the networks so I have a pretty good idea what's going on. happy.gif

Boys r us replied: Haaa..THANKS!!!!!

A&A'smommy replied: great way to put it..... btw they just said that Kerry just called Bush... what is that about?

Kaitlin'smom replied: its all sometimes confusing....

so my question what do they di if its a tie (gosh I hope it does not happen)

jcc64 replied: It's over now, Kerry conceded.
This country has a lot of healing to do.

Kaitlin'smom replied: ya I heard, I hope things start to look up........

5littleladies replied:
If they would have had a tie it would have gone to the House and Senate where Bush would have probably won anyways since there is a republican majority. I believe the House would pick the President and the Senate would pick the vice president, but it could be vice-versa.

5littleladies replied:
That's what mine said too. tongue.gif

MommyToAshley replied:
Kerry conceded. It was reported that he was very gracious and congratulated Bush. He is going to give a speech in about 15 minutes. (1 PM EST)

My2Beauties replied: Ugh, now I must go weep...joking! This election sucked just like 2000! I hate voting in Kentucky, nomatter what you do Republicans win by a landslide in this state and I feel as if my vote doesn't count for anything...again I hate this electoral college, always have, always will! mad.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Yes the Senate would have been able to choose the VP in a tie...and from what I heard their agenda was to vote democratic even if we have a republican president. Wouldn't that have been a hoot! rolleyes.gif

coasterqueen replied:
rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif That's too funny! I'll have to tell him he wasn't alone in his thinking. tongue.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Well I'm still for the electoral college and I live in Illinois which clearly didn't do me as a republican diddly crap! But I don't know about your state but in mine....the popular vote was Kerry's too. I think I need to move to Missouri!

Edit to say: In Kentucky even the popular vote went to Bush....so even if you didn't have the electoral college your state was still for your opponent wink.gif.

My2Beauties replied:
LOL we should switch! It was like 60% votes for Bush here, it's like the for Republicans every year, our senators, judges, all those positions are always republicans. Seriously democrats don't stand a chance here!

coasterqueen replied:
They don't stand a chance there because your state has way too many republicans in it. If you got more democrats there you'd have more of a chance...nothing no one can do and it shouldn't be something you should be upset about.

One county and I do mean ONE COUNTY in our state makes up the MAJORITY of our democratic votes...there are two small counties down south that are the rest of the democratic votes...the rest of the state is a majority Republican but because of ONE county we basically will always give the electoral votes to a democrat. Now that stinks IMO but I'm not going to be upset about it wink.gif.

MommyToAshley replied:
If the election was based purely on popular vote, it wouldn't matter what the popular vote was for the state, but the popular vote for the entire US.

And, Bush won the popular vote... so he would have been elected based purely on popular vote as well.

coasterqueen replied: I agree Dee Dee. I didn't word it so well...but I was trying to show her that even the popular vote in her state was for Bush and the electoral college didn't matter in the very end of things. I still can't explain it well, lol
