finger foods?

kimberley wrote: does anyone know if it is bad to go straight from rice cereal to soft finger foods and skip the mush stage? i will keep trying with K but it seems she had no interest in anything she can't hold except for rice cereal. TIA.

ediep replied: I don't see why it would be bad, I guess the only concern would be choking, but I am sure you'll be watching for that

luvmykids replied: ITA with Edie, I think the "mush" stage is to get them used to more texture but if she's not interested I say go ahead (with caution wink.gif )

garrettsmom replied: I've been in kind of the same situation lately........what are some good finger foods??

coasterqueen replied: Nope not bad at all, IMO, as long as you think she can handle it. Some skip the cereal stage and go straight to finger foods...ahem..like me and it was fine. I say GO give that baby some YUMMY finger food. tongue.gif

BTW, I'm needing a Kaleigh photo fix....and a Jade photo fix...what the heck...I need a whole family photo fix....come on...you haven't shared in a while..........please....... biggrin.gif tongue.gif

Cece00 replied: We did a short "mush" period with my daughter...once she found REAL foods, baby food wasnt as much of an interest. If its all I am serving, she is happy to eat it, but put something on the highchair that SHE can feed herself, or eat something that she likes near her & she doesnt want anything to do with baby food.

Just watch for choking hazards & you should be fine.

CantWait replied:

I agree we need our current photo fix. wub.gif wub.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: banana cut in pieces... bread... pancakes... muffin... cheese slightly mushed between your fingers...cheerios...avocado... small pieces of pasta...

kimberley replied:
wow i really am a baby food rookie lol. i thought all that stuff had to wait til a year blush.gif blush.gif. she loves farley biscuits and rice. thanks for the advice and i will post pics eventually. our digi camera is messed up (won't transfer) and i only have a few on dh's phone that i can post when i get a break from unpacking boxes. wacko.gif

luvmykids replied: I also cooked baby carrots, potatoes, yams, apples, pears, until they were soft enough to mash with a fork but still a little chunky and let them pick at it.

holley79 replied: Annika is the same way, Kim. If we are using a spoon she wants it and refuses to eat unless she can feed herself. She also wants to put her hands in everything and stuff her own face. wacko.gif

I thought so too! I know cow's milk is off the menu until 12 months but I see some folks giving cheese and yogurt before then. How does that work, and when can we start with those? We just went to the doc and she mentioned that we could add meat but said nothing about dairy.

luvmykids replied:
I don't know the hard and fast rule, our doc gave the ok for dairy other than cows milk around 9 months, including eggs. But I know some are strongly opposed to any dairy.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: blah bloah blah.

My doctor told me that anything is fine...and as for eggs -to start with the yolk only...and gradually add egg white... and to do this gradually because there is egg white in one of the vaccines, and they don't want the child to be allergic to eggs...

Naomie is 9 1/2 months, and the only thing she doesn't eat is tougher meat. She can eat chicken cut up really small, ground meat... she eats pretty mnuch anything now. She likes olives...how wierd is that? (diced of course)

msoulz replied: Groovy, that opens up more options! Thanks!!! hug.gif

Edited to show what I just found on askdrsears.com! Answered one of my questions!!

MILK VS. YOGURT FOR BABIES
"Hello Dr. Bob and Jim:
Why is it OK to give a 9 month old baby yogurt made with whole milk and NOT OK to give a 9 month old baby whole milk to drink?
Thank you for your response."

The answer is that if you give an infant under a year cow’s milk, the infant can develop microscopic gastrointestinal bleeding (you don’t see it in the diaper), and this can lead to anemia and other problems. Yogurt does not cause this same reaction. Now: WHY does this happen? It seems to be the milk proteins that are responsible for this mild allergic reaction. In yogurt or infant formulas, the milk proteins are “de-natured” by heat in such a way that this allergic reaction does not happen.

holley79 replied:
I just read that last night on Dr Sears. I love that sight. Annika loves the baby yo gurt in the cooler section. She also likes the yogurt/ juice blends. My dr told me as long as it wasn't straight cow's milk you were good to go. I do slip Annika a bit of scrambled egg now and again when I'm eating it. She loves it. My mom was feeding up eggs and all that good stuff before it was time. I guess we all survived so will ours. emlaugh.gif
