first jobs - did your first job lead to a career?
boyohboyohboy wrote: I was thinking the other day how long I have been in health care, and how long I have been a nurse! I have been working in the hosp. since I was 14. I started as a candy striper and my first job was working in central supply in the hosp where I was to dress from head to toe in sterile clothes and then with a lint roller pick the lint off the sterile drapes used in the OR! talk about boring! Then my second duty was to clean the suction machines before they were placed into the auto clave! I hate hate hate suction machines...(right tara!)
From there I went into nursing school and am still a nurse..15 yrs as a licensed nurse and 22yrs in the hosp..I cant imagine it!
Has your first job lead to a career? what was your first job?
stella6979 replied: My first job was working at Tubby's and no, it did not develop into a career.
My3LilMonkeys replied: My 1st job was working in a restaurant. It did not lead to my career, but I did meet my DH there.
mom21kid2dogs replied: I was a paper girl at 10. I carried 2 routes~one morning, one evening. I was the resident neighborhood babysitter from 11 on but sat routinely for my siblings at 10 and had a 3 hour a day sitting job at 12 for a newborn . (I was a ridiculously responsible child and very skilled with babies by that age). I've had about 20 other jobs (both paid & unpaid) in my lifetime. They certainly are all a piece of the fabric that made me who I am and ultimately led to my major in social work but none developed into a career directly.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: My first real job (not counting babysitting) was at a small town bakery. It led to being slightly overweight - too much time alone with all those doughnuts. But it was through working there that I met the guy who introduced me to my hubby.
PrairieMom replied: i started at kentucky fried chicken, moved to dairy queen in college, then streight to the hospital.
HuskerMom replied: My first job was the Easter bunny at the mall so that job didn't really lead anywhere. I thought it would be fun but it sucked.
cameragirl21 replied: My first job, outside of babysitting, was a camp counselor for five year olds at JCC pre-camp in Toledo, OH. I didn't pursue a career in childcare or early education but I did become a kids' photographer. What's funny is that at the time I thought I wanted to go into business, and not the kind of business I'm in now but rather the corporate, mogul, fast moving type and what was obvious to everyone who knew me except myself that I am so not they type for that kind of gig. At the time, everyone tried to convince me to go into some field involving kids but I didn't think they were right, I was so sure they were wrong and I knew better but look what ended up happening.
TheOaf66 replied: my first job was at a gas station...if only I had stayed there
Hillbilly Housewife replied: My first job, I was a volunteer working in an old age home, in the gift shop, and entertaining on special occasions.
When I was 14, I also did some volunteer work with GASCN, which was a weekly saturday afternoon program for children with severe disabilities. We mainly did some crafts, did some song/dance stuff, took them swimming in the rec centre's pool, and had some snacks. I did this for 4 years, weekly. In the meantime, I worked at McDonalds - or rather, I should say, I did the 3 day training, worked one shift, and quit... I did some time as a jewellery person in Walmart.. then i worked in my mother's law office.
When I turned 15, I worked in a Builder's Warehouse, in the payroll department, through an employment agency.. moved on from there to working a contract in the federal government... and have been pretty much working within the federal government in the legal field ever since. There was that stint in Joliette and the year following when I moved back to Ottawa where i did other stuff... but it was relating to elderly people, and daycare.. so i've pretty much always stayed in the same two fields... working with elderly/young people, or in the professional legal field.
Although I can't call it a career, because I have no formal education in it, I've certainly stayed on the same professional path my entire work life.
DVFlyer replied: McDonald's.... gosh I miss that polyester uniform.....
Celestrina replied: Oh no. My first job was working at a horse barn cleaning stalls. They didn't exactly pay me; they took a percentage off our monthly boarding fees for my horse. I was around 15 at the time.
coasterqueen replied: My first job outside of babysitting was in a greenhouse/nursery. I always thought I'd get more into it as I got older and would love to, but the pay sucks. Then I started a business type job booking movies for theatres in Indy, Chicago, and Southern IL and I probably would have stayed there but went away to college - but since that first business type job I've been in association work ever since.
msoulz replied: My first job was at a Dunkin' Donuts. No career there. And I didn't eat a doughnut for probaby 10 years after I left there!
Boo&BugsMom replied: Heeeeeeeeeck noooooooooo! My first job was cleaning kennels at the humane society! As much as I loved the animals, I did not like cleaning the poo and tinkles. I also didn't like the way some people treated the animals which is why I left after 2 months.
MommytoKKC replied: My first job was a hostess at Bob Evans. It did not lead to a career. In fact, it taught me I should stay away from customer service. I am not a good fit for that job!
redchief replied: 1st job, plumber; 2nd job, firefighter; third job, fire service instructor; fourth, EMT. Roll all of those up and I get where I am now as a senior fire inspector.
