hanging tomato plant

boyohboyohboy wrote: has anyone ever bought that upside down hanging tomato plant on tv and grown it?
I am thinking about it, and wanted to know if it worked.
its called topsy turvy

MommyToAshley replied: I've wanted to try this for a few years now, but never have.

BAC'sMom replied: My Mom bought me one a few weeks ago but I have yet to plant in it. I am going to try to do that today so I'll keep you posted how it does.

FYI-They now sell them at Walgreens and they are cheaper than they are on tv. wink.gif

DillsMommy replied: The topsy turvy tomato tree! I was going to ask this same question. laugh.gif I want one.

boyohboyohboy replied: I ordered two day. so I hope they work..
BAC's mom what are you hanging them on? I think I need some kind a thick sturdy wrought iron poll...

my2girls replied: You can make them yourself out of 5 gallon buckets and a plant hook.
That is what did and they work great!

Here is the link to the website I have used to bulid mine:

BAC'sMom replied:
I will probably hang mine in a tree by the garden or on wrought iron pole. I have not decided yet tongue.gif Like I said my Mom bought it for me. My tomato plants are loaded in my garden, I am just waiting for them to turn ripe. I am just going to fix the topsy turvy because she bought it for me and I am tired of the grief she is giving me for not using it rolleyes.gif

coasterqueen replied:
That's what I'd do. I'd be afraid of what chemicals they put in the tomatoes those others ones would have. I don't know about tomato plants in a box from tv. unsure.gif

BACmom and Stacy, you'll have to let me know how they are. thumb.gif

boyohboyohboy replied:
karen, these come as just seeds in a packet, do you think I should get seeds from somewhere else.
I wanted to do this as pure as possible, since they are for jake. my plan is to make a spag sauce mixture that mary told me about that hides spinach, carrots, and other veggies. I dont have a lot of room to grow much, and tara is helping me make a box to grow some things in..but I thought hanging tomatos might free me up some room.
should I get seeds from a certain place?

coasterqueen replied:
Stacy, I'm sure those seeds are just as good as the seeds you buy in the store. The only difference in buying regular or organic is this...

"A short, simplified definition of organically grown seeds would be those grown without benefit of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and toxic chemicals."

As you know I'm always for organic, but that's ME, maybe not you or anyone else.

This article was sent to me the other day regarding growing veggies from seeds and it's a decent one explaining all the different varieties: Difference in Seeds. I can't really tell you how good the source is but it makes sense. I like the last line: "Plant what you want, raise it your way, enjoy it and don’t worry about whether it is hybrid, open pollinated, heirloom or organic!"

Because truly, it is "to each their own". And really growing your own vegetables without using pesticides to grow them (not talking about the seeds, but pesticides you'd put on them to help them grow, etc) is a good thing no matter what. thumb.gif

BTW, *I* too will buy regular seeds if I can't get ahold of them in organic ones. I think the most important thing, like I said before is not putting more pesticides, etc on them when growing them. Also, I'd much rather get a tomato out of my own garden no matter what kind of seeds I use, than one from Mexico, etc. tongue.gif

So I know it seems like I'm contradicting myself, and I am in a sense. It's just really what YOU believe in doing and that is all that matters.

BAC'sMom replied: Stacy, my topsy turvy kit did not come with seeds I went and bought plants to go in it. You are going to get tomatoes faster from plants than seeds.

Karen, I’ll let you know if the tomatoes start glowing and I certainly would not eat them if they did. wink.gif I too do not use pesticides I use MY compost that I make with food scrapes, clippings, good old horsesh*t etc. I ONLY use a local organic fertilizer.

boyohboyohboy replied:
ok so for $20 and then $15 for shipping these stupid things better comes with seeds! the infomercial seemed like the seeds came with it. now I am going to have to check, especially since you said I can get them at walgreens.
thanks

coasterqueen replied:
ohmy.gif It cost you $35 for two tomato hanging plants? Holy cow! You can get it at Walgreens for $9.99 and from what I read on their site it doesn't come with seeds. It says:

"So easy to use!

* Place any tomato plant in the planter
* Add your favorite potting soil
* Hang it up and water
* Simple to set up and maintain.
* UV-resistant, durable materials to last for years.
* Hangs on deck, balcony or patio.
* Up to 30 pounds of tomatoes per plant!
* Swivel top for easy turning "

So my guess is saying "place any tomato plant in the planter" means you have to put your own, it's not included.? That's what I gather.

That better be one fancy planter, too. I think you can buy a 5 gallon bucket from Lowes or Menards for $3.50, then seeds are around $1-2.

boyohboyohboy replied: I am calling and canceling my order and going to walgreens!
