Today an older kid (12 or 13) was "heelying" through the mall and collided (sp?) with my five year old daughter. both kids got hurt the boy hit his head pretty hard on the rails they have going down the handicapped ramps. and my daughter hit her face on it. now she has a black eye, which is absolutely wonderful since we were on our way to get the kids Easter pics done. so i had to cancel my appointment and reschedule for later next week. anyway dh pretty much had to drag me out of the mall kicking and screaming b/c i totally flipped on the boys mom and the security guard who was about 2 stores back and watched the kid slide on by him. i am soooo angry ugggg. I HATE HEELYS
ok i think i'm done thanks fore listening
StephanieM replied: OMG! I would have been pissed! I would write the head of something...there has to be someone in high ranks that can do something about this. I'd threaten lawsuit! I agree that there should be signs about no heeleys...but parents also need to take responsibility...what did the mother of the boy say? I would have slapped her.....oooooooh That makes me so mad for you....someone would definitely be getting a phone call or letter from me. UGH! So sorry about your DD
skinkybaby replied: I hate those shoes/skates/whatever you want to call them. Hate them hate them hate them. When I worked at Old Navy in college they were very strict about not letting kids skate around on them in the store. They're a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Miranda1127 replied: omg she so gets a dumb @$$. first of all she was on her phone not paying attention to her ds. after she realized what happened she picked him up by the shirt and said something along the lines of watch where your going, and than tried to walk away. i just flipped omg i can't even remember what i said, i was livid. the security guard came over and started telling her her son had to retract his heelys in the mall. i asked him if he seen what happened he said yes i seen the entire thing (and even admitted seeing the boy slide by him). and i completely flipped on him. eventually a head security guy came out and i had to fill out an incident report. i also filled out a complaint report on the guard for neglecting to secure the safety of mall guests (or something like that).
Calimama replied: Ugh how awful!! When I was about 7 months pregnant with Bella a teenager was skating with those shoes outside the mall and ran into me hard enough that if DH hadn't caught me, I would have been on the ground. I really, REALLY don't like those shoes.
redplaydoh replied: I have no idea what a "heely" is but from reading the posts it seems like it is a shoe with wheels??? Regarding the incident, I'd have reacted about the same way too. I'm sorry that happened. I hope your picture day next time is much better.
kimberley replied: i am sorry that happened but i'd blame the parent before the shoes. my kids have been asking for them for a while but they are just out of my budget to do it. i think they are kinda fun but definitely NOT for indoors at the mall. i hope your daughter heals quickly.
hawkshoe replied: I hate them too. As a parent, I would never buy them for my child. Our local mall, and many local stores, have signs posted banning the use of them. Still kids try to get away with them. I hope your daughter is alright.
Miranda1127 replied: i place blame with both. more so w/ parents. After all they are ultimately responsible for what their children do and for guiding them through life. as for the shoe they set up such incidences. what i mean is hiding wheels in the heel of shoes or combing skates and shoes basically gives a children the permission to use these roller sneakers (which in my opinion if used should only be used in a playground type environment) in all types of environments, after all to a child they are sneakers "with an added feature". it seems to me that this is just an unnecessary product. if a child wants to skate/rollerblade than they should ware skates/rollerblades not a hidden form of such. it just gives children a license to roll (imho), and there is just simply a place for such activity and a shopping area is not it.
this is just my opinion on the product i mean no offense to anyone. properly supervised accidents will be less likely to happen. I am not judging anyone’s parenting here if you decided to get your child these I’m sure you used your best judgment and most likely monitor you child with them. What a few not so attentive parents do should not categorize all “heely” parents in the same manner. i just don't agree with the design. And I feel more strongly abut it now that I had an encounter
Thank you all for listening and for your caring responses
mckayleesmom replied: Sorry that happened to you guys....I have seen those shoes and I don't plan on buying any for my kids.....Im hopeing they are gone by the time they get to the age they make them for. I think they are so dangerous, especially with 1 wheel....I don't want to spend alot of time in the ER.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: That is awful! I'm so sorry your daughter was hurt! I think I would have reacted the same way!
msoulz replied: AMEN to this post.
I could go on about the injuries I have witnessed with these things and how I have kicked myself for not putting my foot down when a friend gave my son his old pair (yes, Dad was the big hero that day ), but suffice it to say, even when the child has a helmet and wrist guards they can still hurt him/herself. The things are just plain dangerous.
My son no longer has heely's. Fortunately he has all of his teeth and the scabs have healed.
Edited because I hit return instead of shift . . .
beavair replied: Ok, I am so sorry for what happened but thank you for that post!!! My 8 yr old has Heelys and they drive me nuts! Because she has gotten so adept at them and is always supervised I have caved on numerous occasions allowing her to Heely at the grocery store and on errands. Her dad lets her wear them where ever. I threaten to never let her get another pair but now I think I will put my foot down and just tell her no Heelys at the store, only when playing out front. That is all they should be for-outside. Even today she wore them to the comissary and I blurted out my usual "I hate those things!" as she Heely-ed out in front of our cart. I could just imagine her colliding with an old person! Thank you thank you...no more Heelying out with Mom. Now if I can convince Dad.
FYI-Heely's are not allowed at Sea World or Disneyland
lisar replied: Lexi has a pair of these. She is getting pretty good on them. She is NOT allowed to wear them to school, or the store. She can wear them outside on the side walk or the driveway or to a friends house. I hate it when all those kids are at the store skating around. It drives me insane. And Lexi would NOT have a pair if my best friend didnt buy them for her. I refused to buy them so she did. So I am with yall on this one.
HuskerMom replied: I think they sound like fun for kids as long as they don't use them in public places like that. Our skatepark got shut down because kids got hurt skating and their parents would sue the city. So now they're all skating on streets and outdoor public places. I think the skate park was a good thing, it gave them all a place to go and have fun. People are just too sue-happy. Sorry I kind of went off subject and went on a rant.
A&A'smommy replied: They are DEFINITLY dangerous and I have had a few kids almost run into me in the mall... thank goodness I didn't have alyssa with me!!
PrairieMom replied: ITA with this post! I hate those things! Being that we have just had 7 months of winter here and have not been able to play out side I haven't seen many lately, but I know that they will be coming out again when the weather warms. Heaven help the first kid that runs my child over with a pair of those. They are just plain dangerous.
