learning letters!

amynicole21 wrote: We bought Sophia a foam letter and numbers set for the bathtub last week, and she is loving it! Every night we stick the letters to the wall and I tell her whose name starts with that letter. Now she knows at least half of the letters, and will point to certain ones and say "Helen" for H or "Titi" for T - and she gets them right 80% of the time! ohmy.gif

Now, colors are a different story... she still mixes those up most of the time. Seems like everything is "lellow" still. rolleyes.gif She does usually get pink right, though tongue.gif

MommyToAshley replied: WTG Sophia! It won't be long before she knows the entire alphabet.

Ashley has those letter too. She loves them. Between those letters and her books, she's learned all of her letters. Except she mixes up "W" and "M".

DansMom replied: Maybe this proves that girls are smarter than boys LOL! Daniel has the foam letters too, but still likes to bite them and make tooth marks rather than name them. He is starting to pretend to count though. He says "two, two, two, two"---I guess that's his favorite number!

MommyToAshley replied: Also, have you tried Elmo's World? Ashley loves this website. One of her favorite games is Keyboard-o-rama (it's called something like that). I think that has helped Ashley learn her letters too. There's a link under the Entertainment sections of this web site in the For Kids Only section. Or, here's a direct link:

The chicken dance Elmo has helped Ashley to count, she can count to 10 now. And she also likes the play the one where you find all the dogs. rolling_smile.gif

rolling_smile.gif LOL! Sophia always leaves off 1-2-3 and six and starts "fooow, fiy, seben, eight, nine, TEN!!" (at ten, she claps and raises her arms over her head in victory!) rolling_smile.gif

No, I've never been to that site! Thanks thumb.gif We're always looking for good toddler sites - kneebouncer.com is getting a bit old (for me!) rolleyes.gif

I want to get Sophia accustomed to Sesame Street, too, because we just got Sesame Street Live tickets for September smile.gif She never watches the show now... tongue.gif

5littleladies replied: Wow, I'm impressed!! WTG Sophia! It has never even occured to me to try and teach Bri her letters yet, but I just might have to get hopping. happy.gif

kimberley replied: thumb.gif wtg Sophia!! what a smart girl! i am sure the colors will come in no time wink.gif

coasterqueen replied:
LOL! Uh...no I don't think so. Kylie does the same thing. rolling_smile.gif Maybe we got them for her too early. She's had them well before she was a year old. She really doesn't play with them as much anymore. She likes to play with 2 cups that she transfers water back and forth in now. rolling_smile.gif

jem0622 replied: That is neat that she can get it so early! They do learn through repetition at this age...not from memory. So just going over letters and colors with objects or flashcards is a help. Nathan (4 1/2) can now look at a letter and know what it is, draw it, and sound it out. But at the age of our little ones he could easily recite the alphabet song because he heard it all of the time in daycare.

Gabe knows pink too. Funny. We have a book about a caterpillar that turns into a butterfly and he likes to recite the colors of the wings. I am really trying to work more on the colors right now than the letters. And animal sounds. Gabe sees an animal or a picture of one and he can tell you what it is and what sound it makes. Very cute! He can't snort like a pig but he wants to! LOL LOL.

All children learn in stages. Just remember that! One will get what another does not. No one learns the same. Unforutnately our school systems (with the exception of Montessori) haven't figured that out yet. rolleyes.gif
