molluscum contagiosum

my2monkeyboys wrote: Anyone ever heard of this??? Apparently Will has it. Luckily it's just a viral infection of sorts that pretty much just makes red bumps, kind of like moles, but red. Anyway we're treating it with benzoyl peroxide 2x a day, but if it spreads or doesn't start healing in the next 3-4 days we'll be seeing the dr to possibly have them frozen.

Anyone else's kid ever get this? They say it's a common child hood illness, but I've never even heard of it!

MommyToAshley replied: I've never hear of it either.

Hope he feels better soon.

Crystalina replied: There has to be another name for that right? I'm too tired to Google. That name just sounds so "medical". Never heard of it before. I hope what your doing works for it. hug.gif

Calimama replied: I can't even PRONOUNCE it let alone know what it is.. huh.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: Yep, my friends boys just had it. SEE A DR NOW! Having them burned off is VERY painful for them, I would get into a dermatologist asap so they can treat them before it gets too bad. Her pedi told her it could take care of it self but might take 6 months, their school noticed it and would not allow them back until they were treated by a derm.....that's why she had to have them burned off and it was over a week of much pain for them.

mom21kid2dogs replied: My nephews have had this. It cleared with a topical medication. It is contagious, though. thumb.gif

my2monkeyboys replied: Ok, I thought I was crazy not ever having heard of this! It's nice to know it's really not as common as they say - at least there's a reason I haven't heard of it.

Right now we're doing the benzoyl peroxide cream and band-aids over them. He only has 1 kind of big, red one on his side. The other 3-4 are little flesh colored ones on the underside of his arm. I realized it was something more than just a weird insect bite when I noticed that the ones on his arm meet up with the one on his side, like it was transferred there.

What kind of topical cream did your nephews use?

Thanks!

moped replied: Yes I have heard of this......I researched it with Jack once, but don't think that is actually what he had.

holley79 replied: Never heard of that before.

A&A'smommy replied: YEAP BTDT don't worry about it, it does eventually go away we made the mistake of going to the dermatologist and the stuff they use to make it go away it extremely painful. bawling.gif Alyssa had it when she was about 18months old it went away about a year later and she still has holes in her skin from it bawling.gif

my2monkeyboys replied: It took the derm. a year to get rid of it???

mom21kid2dogs replied:
I thought their's was a steriod based cream but they also have other skin conditions so I couldn't say for sure. This is a virus that is similar to the one that causes common warts. Like warts, it can definately take a while to clear up. IIRC, it cleared in >6 months. If I talk to my sis tonight I'll get a better answer for you. My understanding is though it is contagious, it's no more so than warts.

A&A'smommy replied:
We went to the ped to have her look at it and she said that its not a big deal that it will go away but I chose to be referred to a derm. anyway long story short he said that is completely unnecessary for us to do anything to it but we could so I did but only on a few and it was a HORRIBLE experience. She had it on the upper part of her arm, all over her right side she was COVERED so it took about a year for it to completely go away.

my2monkeyboys replied: Poor thing! I think I'm just going to do what I'm doing now, and see if that helps. If it starts spreading I'll take him to his dr.
Thanks ladies!!!
