need some P&PT for my little niece - (rare disease)

Last week my SIL took her into the emergency b/c she had been throwing up for the past couple days and it got so bad that she couldn't even eat soup without it coming up..

the doctor said she has a rare disorder called achalasia. It is when the esophogus muscles won't relax enough for the food to go down so it just gets stuck in there and she ends up getting sick!! She had a test done where they put a scope down her mouth (she was put to sleep for that) to see what was going on and I guess it took them 2 hours to clean all the food that logged in there. Then she had another test done where they have to put a scope up the nose Poor Baby!!!

She is a very small girl as it is and she already lost 12 pounds! She weighs 40 lbs now. The doctors wanted her to come back this week so they could talk about their options - but she got really sick so they took her in today. I feel so sorry for her...especially being so young.

The doctor says surgery won't cure it...it may come back again and there are risks of her esophogus tearing They could also do botox injections where it paralizes the muscles so food can go down all the way...I hope the specialist that sees her today can make her better!!

texasp3 replied: Oh wow... that sounds really awful. I'm so sorry she's having to go through all of this as such a little girl. I'm glad she's getting prompt medical attention though, and will hope and pray that the specialist has more complete information and some good treatment options for her!! Keep us posted, I'm most anxious to hear what they say about her situation.

jcc64 replied: I'm so sorry for you and your family- any time a child is ill with a chronic condition it's got to be terrifying and emotionally exhausting for the whole family. I would strongly suggest that she visit a pediatric specialist in a large teaching hospital if possible. They generally have access to the latest advances, technology, information- the kind of care not usually available in smaller towns, kwim? Best of luck to all of you.

I talked to my mom last night and they did the test again where they put the scope down her mouth- theres a balloon that stretches the esophogus so food can be swallowed easily...well, they did that and got her to eat something and she got sick (again)!! I think surgery will be their only other option.



Yes, she is at a great hospital and her doctor is a specialist so she's in good hands.

I will update again as soon as I know more...I wanted to visit her one day but I am sick with the cold..so I can't go
