ok, last question about crochet/knit

cameragirl21 wrote: Is this knitted or crocheted, can anyone tell? It looks knitted to me based on the stitching around the edges but I can't be sure. And if it's knitted, can something similar be crocheted? I like the colors and the stripes but I'd want thinner stripes so that the colors blend a little better and I don't care for the ear flaps, although they are kind of cute. I want a hat that folds over around the base, if that makes sense.
Here is the pic:

PrairieMom replied: I don't know. To be both stitches look the same when its finished. I doubt that hat was hand made, and I don't know if machine stitches can be done the same as hand made ones. KWIM? huh.gif

Calimama replied: It's cute though! thumb.gif

PrairieMom replied: Here is the hat that I made. It is crocheted, and I left the ball off the top.

cameragirl21 replied:
it says it's handmade, do you think they are lying?
Not that I would know either way but they claim it to be handmade...how can you tell it isn't?
I don't think machines can crochet, can they? I think they can only knit it in a spinner or whatever?
Good God, I really am a total city girl in every sense of the word, lol. blush.gif

cameragirl21 replied:
That is so cute, T! I am not into pom poms either, I would have left it off too. Did you buy a pattern or something?
Very cute, I wish I could make things like that, not that I have the patience....

PrairieMom replied:
If it says its hand made then it probably is. I have no idea how the machines do it, but clearly they must, because we have sweaters. laugh.gif

Is there a reason why you would want knitted over crocheted?

PrairieMom replied:
That is the pattern. Its the paper tube that surrounds the skein of yarn when you buy it. The directions are on the other side.

Mommy2Isabella replied: Here is the one I was talking about in the other thread

Don't mind Isabella, she is a HAM! I couldn't get her to move ...

PrairieMom replied:
I have made one like that too. It was super easy, fast and fun.
I wonder if I have pics of it...

Mommy2Isabella replied: She started it while she was here right after Bella was born and finished it after she went home and sent it to us. She would do a little each day .. so I think it depends on how determined the person doing it is ... But 2 weeks, that would take me like 3 years to make. LOL!!

cameragirl21 replied:
I just think the hats that I saw that I want are knitted, that's all, obviously I can't tell the difference so it really doesn't matter. laugh.gif
So that pattern, was it hard? I mean, do you follow it the whole way thru, stitch by stitch or is it just an instruction sheet? I really wouldn't even begin to know how to do that.... blush.gif

PrairieMom replied:
Basically its all written in abbreviations. Once you learn the basic stitches and learn to decipher the code it isn't that hard. obviously I made a bunch of mistakes but it turned out okay in the end. laugh.gif
Basically it goes by lines or rows.
for example mine says

With MC, ch 59. Join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.

that is the first row.

that had has I think 6 rows, that maybe repeat, I don't remember .
when you get it done, you add the flip up part last.

PrairieMom replied: Here are some of my projects. I just recently started taking pictures of them before I give them away.

Mommy2Isabella replied: WOW ... I could never learn that ... LOL

I do enough with scrapbooking ... lol

PrairieMom replied:
you totally could. Its actually mindless work. Um... not that I think you are mindless. rolling_smile.gif Its nice to sit in front of the TV and just let your fingers go. If you can count to 10 you can make those zig zag ones. No problem. wink.gif

cameragirl21 replied: wow, why would you give that away, Tara?! Don't you want more kids, save them for the next one and then for your grandkids, I'd never give away anything like that if I made it.
And as for the stitches you describe in the first row...with a gun to my head I'd not know what any of that means.... huh.gif

PrairieMom replied:
I make them as gifts. The pink one I made for Al, and the one in the pic with Ben in it was for Ben, but the others I made for other people. I cross stitch too, and usually give those away as gifts. I have never made a cross stitch pic for me. happy.gif I am making one now tho that I intend to keep.

PrairieMom replied:
yeah. I know. It takes me forever to figure out what I am supposed to be doing. rolleyes.gif Its getting easier the more I do it tho. thumb.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: This went quite a bit off topic, but that hat looks crocheted to me. It could be knitted though - they often look similar.

Tara - your work is great! I have tried crocheting and I can't ever manage to get past the first row - I have a hard time attaching the second row.

PrairieMom replied:
I had a hard time following the directions, I needed someone to physically show me how to do it, but once I figured it out a light bulb went on for me. laugh.gif Don't be to impressed, I can basically just to lines, anything more takes lots of concentration and pratice. I end up pulling a lot of stuff apart before I get it. blush.gif
