poopy question

~Roo'sMama~ wrote: Andrew hasn't pooped yet today. He always goes within an hour or two after waking up in the morning, an usually has gone again by this time of day. unsure.gif All in all he goes 2 or 3 times a day at the very least. He's tooting a lot though, and is acting like something is hurting him. Could he be constipated? He's taking a nap right now .... I'm really hoping that he'll go when he wakes up! wacko.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied: update - he's up from his nap and still nada. His last 2 naps were only half an hour long too so I'm thinking he's too uncomfortable to sleep. sad.gif

MyLuvBugs replied: yeah it does sound like something is stuck. have you tried a small 4 oz bottle of water? That always gets Lorelei flushed out. lol

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
No -- maybe I'll try that tonight... better yet I'll have Dh do it since he's home now! happy.gif I feel so bad for the poor little guy! My ped has told me before that sometimes babies just don't poop every day but it seems kinda weird for him to go from a few times a day to none.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Is he exclusively BF? If so, it seems really wierd to go from a few to none.

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Yep he is. I really thought he would have gone by now! If he hasn't gone by tomorrow morning I'm going to call his ped.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Ours had us try a 4 ounce bottle of water with a tiny bit, like a teaspoon, of Karo syrup in it. Cleaned Logan right out. But he was pretty uncomfortable before I did it.

MyLuvBugs replied: I just read an article that karo syrup can act just like Honey and could cause batulism (sp?). Please don't do that. sad.gif Sorry. Try just water first. It's only been a day. If nothing comes out tomorrow, you might want to ask your PED or your ped's nurse for advice. We just used Water and sometimes a bit of prune juice.

Since he's BF only, it might be something that you ate that is affecting him. And it's not a bad thing either. Most BF babies don't poop everyday. So maybe you ate something and transferred it to him and his body is just taking it's time digesting it. But don't worry too much about constipation until 3 days of no poop. rolleyes.gif that's when its realllllly a problem.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Well I gave him some water - he drank about 2 ounces of it. He still hasn't gone, maybe he didn't drink enough though.

I guess I'm not too worried about it yet, I know it's normal for some babies to not poop every day I just think it would have gone down more gradually if that was the case, plus he seems so uncomfortable and has been passing gas ALL DAY. rolleyes.gif

And yeah his ped told me not to give him any honey or corn syrup until he's a year old so I won't give him any of that... thanks though. smile.gif I am planning on calling his clinic in the morning just to see if they have any suggestions that will help if he doesn't go before they open.

MyLuvBugs replied: poor little guy. Give him a big hug.gif and try rubbing his tummy too. Poor baby. His tummy's all plugged up. Hopefully, you're ped will have some more suggestions. smile.gif

huggybugboy replied: i have answers!! redbounce.gif not the best ones necessarily....
miles went through the EXACT same thing at the same age. he was super regular - 2-3 times a day like clockwork. then, all of a sudden he stopped pooping. Everyone kept telling me that breast fed babies don't get constipated. I kept telling everyone "well he is!" apparantly, they just dont have to poop everyday. some babies can go a week without pooping just fine. However, this shouldnt be causing any real pain to your baby. If it is causing pain (miles was pretty uncomfortable) the doc said I could give him a half of a infant glycerin suppository or just a little diluted prune juice. I suggest the prune juice. I put a couple dropper fulls in a couple ounces of water and it worked like a charm. He never got regular again until we started giving him solids. Do not use honey!!! it is like poison to a baby under 1. The bacteria inside honey is very dangerous. (it says so even on the honey container). Good luck and hug.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Hmm... I may have to take a walk to the grocery store in the morning for some prune juice! (dang small town with no 24 hour stores dry.gif ) Surprisingly enough, we don't happen to have any on hand. tongue.gif

Thanks everyone for your suggestions ~ hopefully my little guy will not be too uncomfortable to sleep tonight and I can get him some help tomorrow.

zdk753 replied: Just don't do what I did once. My oldest son was also constipated & very uncomfortable. I called & asked his dr. what I could give him. He told me to feed him some prunes. So I went to the store & bought a jar of prunes & fed him the whole jar. His dr. didn't tell me it only took a little bit to work. I didn't think I was ever going to stop cleaning up poop.

redchief replied:
At one time... in the VERY distant past, Karo Syrup did have botulism spores. This is no longer the case. You can use Karo freely to help your baby with his number 2 problem.

Dr. Greene speaks about it here: http://www.drgreene.com/21_1953.html

Oh yes... BF babies do on occasion get a little constipated. As long as it doesn't go on for days, you probably don't have to do anything, and nature will take it's course. If you're concerned he is uncomfortable, any of the remedies listed above should get things moving in short order. smile.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Hmmm, interesting! I wonder if it's just Karo that is ok, or all corn syrup. unsure.gif The way my ped talked, not giving babies corn syrup was a new thing. I might have misunderstood her, though.

I'll probably just try giving him prune juice first though since it seems like a milder way to treat it. And the thought of drinking corn syrup in water grosses me out... not that it would bother him any. tongue.gif

You know I'm still hoping that he'll just wake up an poop tomorrow. tongue.gif

redchief replied:
Unfortunately docs aren't immune to urban legends and myths either... The spores remained after processing due to the methods used to process the syrups. When they were found the FDA ordered that all corn syrups (and maple and other liquid sweeteners) be pasteurized. Pastuerization kills the spores. All corn syrups should now be safe from that.

Good to know Ed, Thanks!! thumb.gif

Nathansmom replied: I think it was around 2 months when Nathan went from pooping 2-3 times a day, to once every 4 days. It scared me at first, and the first couple times he was a little fussy about it, but then we both got used to it, and he did that until he started solids.

BF babies are unpredictable poopers sometimes.

amynicole21 replied: Nora did this too! She went from having a poopy diaper at EVERY diaper change to going every other day or so. The change happened very suddenly - within a day - and happened at around 3 months of age. I think it's just their digestive tracts maturing. Sophia used to go almost a week without pooping when she was this age (still does actually wink.gif )

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Hmm well I was planning on calling the ped this morning, but now both you and Nathansmom are saying this happened to you too so I don't know. I think I'll wait and see... if he hasn't gone by this afternoon maybe I'll call before they leave for the day.

He actually hasn't gone since tuesday morning I think... I don't think he had his regular evening poop on tuesday. wacko.gif
