re: BPA in bottles and plastics - question
boyohboyohboy wrote: I have a question, for those of you with babies... are you throwing out all your bottles and getting the new born free or something with BPA not in them? what about the sippy cups? I use dr browns because thats all that andrew has ever accepted. now we only have about 3 months left of using bottles, and i hate the idea of getting all new ones and sippy cups too, as this is our last baby. what you are all doing? i can pull up stories on line that say that its something to worry about and then 5 more that say its not, the dr brown web site says nothing about it.. i mean it seems like monthly there is some scare about some product or by product that might or might not cause cancer...
coasterqueen replied: I don't use either, but I'd say if I had three months left on the bottles I'd just use them. You can use so many different ways of thinking to justify either side of the coin here, IMO. As far as sippy cups, I'd probably throw the old ones out and get new in this case. My FWIW .
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: What Karen said .
boyohboyohboy replied: thank you, i was sitting here this morning thinking, what a waste at this point to get all new bottles! but if he needed to then we would. but its hard to get a straight answer on the internet. our sippy cups are not more then 1 1/2 yrs old, we replaced the inserts not long ago, but i hated to invest in a bunch of new ones. but we do have to heat them as jake drinks his soy milk warm. i just wanted to see what others were doing
Boo&BugsMom replied: We used the Playtex Nursers with the liners, so I never threw mine out. I try to not fear "everything" I read and just pick my battles with what is good/bad. From my understanding it's only a real threat if you heat it up, or if it's stored in it right? Maybe I'm wrong?
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I wouldn't replace them either. I think I would heat up the soy milk in a glass measuring cup though (if you're microwaving) and then pour it into the sippy.
boyohboyohboy replied: thats a good idea. i wonder if it conts to leak once you have heated it up, like does the cup constantly emit this chemical now all the time because we heated it once and its releasing it? or does it only leak out when its heated right then and stop when cooled? we do heat the water very warm for andrews bottles. but it said it could be leaked during the cleaning process and i have boiled the bottles a few times. i think i have decided to keep them all.
coasterqueen replied: I'm not saying anything about your opinion to keep the bottles, because I think that's fine, too. I just wanted to add a comment along with your questions. I would think dishwashers would affect the plastic, too, right? The temp gets pretty hot in there so every time they are washed in there does that cause a problem?
msoulz replied:
Check the numbers on the bottoms - not all plastic is evil!
Boo&BugsMom replied: I've been checking the bottoms of the cups, and there are many different numbers. Which ones are accurate? There is a recycle symbol with a number inside it...is it that one?
Boo&BugsMom replied: Stacy, I don't know what brand you use but Nuby products, for the most part, do not contain any of the harmful ingredients. Aiden uses all Nuby products thus far so I looked into it.
msoulz replied: Yes that is the one.
boyohboyohboy replied: we use all dr browns bottles and then the sippy cups are gerber i think. what is the number supposed to be in the recycle triangle on the bottom? is that what i am looking for to see if its harmful or not?
karen, the article i read last night said that yes a hot dishwasher was a cause of the chemical to leak out.
My2Beauties replied: Oh crap I wash all of Aubrey's bottles in the dishwasher because I was thinking it was sanitizing the crap out of them with the hot water and heated drying feature...guess not This really irritates me to find this out. I'm definitely pushing the sippy big time now. She'll be 1 on the 1st anyways, so I guess it's time anyways
msoulz replied: Plastics decoder
This link shows the symbol (e.g. the #5 triangle) and the letters (e.g. PP) used which tell you what kind of plastic.
boyohboyohboy replied: the GMA report that i read on line said some of the sippy cups and other plastic drinking cups also have this chemical in it.. its frustrating. thats why i wondered if everyone was throwing out all their stuff. i went to target today and couldnt find one item that was different then we already had, they didnt seem to sell the born free stuff.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Yes, a lot of Advent and Gerber stuff is made with the toxic stuff. So far our Nuby and Playtex sippers are ok though.
My2Beauties replied: Oh wonderful, I use the Avent bottles
Boo&BugsMom replied: LeaAnn, go to their website and check it out. It may only be certain types of the bottles. Perhaps yours are ok. I don't have a link, but if you Google it you'll find their site. I know, it's very frustrating.
My2Beauties replied: I googled it and went to several websites, they do contain BPA
Kentuckychick replied: I read somewhere that studies showed that the chemicals were leached after constant extreme heatings so we won't be throwing our bottles away.
We use the Soothie brand which apparently does contain the chemicals, but we do not heat them up and we do not wash them in a dishwasher so I'm not too concerned.
I think most people would be safe just heating the water in a separate mug and then pouring it into the bottles. And don't wash them in the dishwasher. Honestly, when I nannied Eric during his bottle days I would wash the bottles pretty promptly by just soaking and rinsing them with good hot water and soap and scrubbing the nipples... if you don't let them sit for long there's no real need to scrub them.
Jackie012007 replied: I don't know what to think. I ended up giving away all my Avent bottles about a month ago, but Carly uses Gerber sippy cups. And honestly, we just don't have the money to throw out the 10+ Gerber sippies we have to go buy more... it is very frustrating!
My3LilMonkeys replied: Well since I haven't started buying for the new baby yet and we got rid of all the old stuff I'm going to go with the 'safe' ones - but if I already had everything I probably wouldn't buy all new.
Jackie, I must say I am impressed - 10+ sippys! My kids always had to make do with 2.
Crystalina replied: Hopefully this is all straightened out by Nov when I need bottles (I bottle and breast feed both). I'm sure another problem will be here by then though.
boyohboyohboy replied: I am just like you, we have at least 10 gerber sippy cups and 9 bottles, and i have boiled them twice since owning them. I have am keeping them and using them. i mean these are the same bottles i used 6 yrs ago, the avent ones, and caleb is fine. and not only that, but one of the articles said that the can the formula comes in also is leaking these chemicals so i think you can find almost anything on line... i also read its in the soda cans.. we always worry when it comes to our kids, but frankly, this is one time i am letting it go. we only have 3 months tops to go..
