school
sunrosejenn wrote: For those that have children please answer this question. If you have a December 1 cut off list your city/state (city/country).
Eliana was born 11-14-04 and the cut off is August 1 here. So, in 2008 she will go to 3 year old preschool at the age of 45 months (almost 4 year old). I honestly think she could benefit if she went to school this year.
I'm looking to move to another location and school is one factor upon my decision. Thanks!
DansMom replied: I voted December 1 but it didn't register. I live in Southeast Michigan.
Kaitlin'smom replied: my option is not listed. Its either Sept 5th or 30th I cant remember, either way Kait can't go to K till fall 08
coasterqueen replied: Our cutoff is September 1. So Kylie will not get to go to kindergarten til she's 6 days shy of 6 years old. Megan will test for preschool next March 2008 when she will be 3. Or at least I hope she'll be able to. She will be a week shy of 3 when they do the testing and I'm not sure if they are strict on that they have to be 3 first or not. Megan will definitely benefit from 2 years of preschool. She is a bit behind, very shy, hasn't had much interaction with other kids her age, etc.
sunrosejenn replied: click on the Sept option...thanks
sunrosejenn replied: Thanks girls!
Here in southern Indiana they have a 3 yr old and a 4 yr old preschool. Eliana will be almost 6 when she starts Kindergarten. I'm not too happy about this. I went to school in TX and MI and started kindergarten at 5 (September 1980) my birthday is August 9th
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Here the cut off is 4 years old before December 31st for pre-K, 5 before dec 31 for K, and 6 before dec 31 for grade 1. There are a limited number of spots available for children whose parents want them to be te exception, like if their birthdays are a few weeks or even up to I think 4 months after the cut off date... if the children pass a battery of specific tests, they can be allowed to go to school even though their age isn't in the cut off limits.
inmom2two replied: I'm in Indiana too, and most schools will let you challenge the age requirement if you are close. My son will be nearly 6 before starting K next year, but for him it's not a bad thing.
sunrosejenn replied: hmmm interesting. I did not know this.
Cut off is Aug 1 and Eliana's bday is 11-14-04. I have a feeling she is going to be extremly bored is she is a year behind according to her bday. she gets bored quite easily now.
amymom replied: I would check with the school and see if they allow the challenge. If not look at private schools for K and then once K is complete the public will allow them in. Also, if you work the tuition at private school should be tax deductable like daycare is, or at least it was when my dd was in K.
Here in NYState the cutoff is Dec. 1st I believe it is through out the entire state. But our school discrict is awesome... so if you want to move I will PM you our school website.
inmom2two replied: Private school for K is a good idea, but some of them are even stricter for admission than public schools. Don't the schools test for grade skipping at the end of 1st grade? That could be an option. Our school's principal pointed something out to me when I was talking about 6 yo's in Kindergarten. She pointed out that school is so much more than academics and many children really benefit socially from being the oldest in their class as opposed to the youngest. I can see how that makes sense. Also, our school starts "placing" kids into academic groups by the second semester of K. They don't make a big deal out of it, but do try to group kids by where their talents/interests lie. I don't know if that's because it's a private school or if most school districts in Indiana do that. You may want to check that out, too.
sunrosejenn replied: As far as I've seen so far even the private schools have the same cut off date around here.
I'd LOVE to move to NY but don't think I could afford living there. I'm a single mom and do not receive child support. Thanks for the website offer.
sunrosejenn replied: I'm in southern indiana...Celestine ... 1 hour north of Evansville ... 1 1/2 hours south of Bloomington.
amymom replied: I don't live in NY City. I live almost 400 miles north of there! It is expensive when you are close to the city. I live in a very rural area and cost of living is less than some places in the midwest. (although our state taxes are pretty high!!! so that is a concern.) We have nice housing in the area for 300 per month and up. But you should be near family as best as you can!!!
sunrosejenn replied: All my family is in MI and Germany. I don't want to move back to MI
amymom replied: Well come to NY then
Good luck with whatever you do.
sunrosejenn replied:
Thanks!
jcc64 replied: Cut off is Dec 1. I live in upstate NY as well- about 100 mi north of NYC. Corey will be starting kindergarten this Sept, on or around her 5th b-day. Both of my boys were still 4 when they started.
C&K*s Mommie replied: Public schools and daycares that offer free voluntary pre-k it is Sept 1st for kindergarten (K-5). For our oldests private school for K-4 it is the end Dec, as long as they are 4 by then. Same with K-5 you have to be 5 by the end of that yr.
msoulz replied: Ditto on the SE MI and Dec. We sent our son when he was 4 (Oct 24 bday). He was too immature and ended up repeating K. The second trip through K was the first year they started a program for the kids like him, born later. Now Erin's birthday is Nov 12, so here we go again with that decision. It was up to us to start him or not, and the school does not test the kids.
rachael.vincent0604 replied: have you looked into montessori schools? they often have programs that start at an early age. its the only type of school i would ever send my kids to. my husband and i both went to one and it was wonderful. you might check into it just to see what you think.
sunrosejenn replied: there are none in this county.
