GavinsMommy replied: I'm so glad! They're probably going to try to appeal it though. I mean...it was pretty stupid of those jurors to jump around in the boat. And even worse that they had to boot some jurors off. I wish he would have gotten 1st degree for Connor mad.gif

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Scott Peterson was convicted Friday of murdering his pregnant wife and dumping her body in San Francisco Bay in what prosecutors in the made-for-cable-TV case portrayed as a cold-blooded attempt to escape marriage and fatherhood for the bachelor life.

Peterson, 32, could get could get the death penalty. He was convicted of one count of first-degree murder for killing his wife, Laci, and one count of second-degree murder in the death of the son she was carrying.

Family members intensely waited in the courtroom and hundreds of onlookers gathered outside to hear word of the verdict.

The verdict came after a five-month trial that was an endless source of fascination to the tabloids, People magazine and the cable networks with its story of an attractive, radiant young couple awaiting the birth of their first child, a cheating husband, and a slaying for which prosecutors had no eyewitnesses, no weapon, not even a cause of death.

The verdict followed a tumultuous seven days of deliberations in which two jurors were removed for unspecified reasons and the judge twice told the panel to start over.

The jury of six men and six women will now decide whether he should die by lethal injection or get life in prison without parole.

The verdict followed the back-to-back dismissals of jurors on Tuesday and Wednesday and a day off of deliberations for Veterans Day. The two dismissed jurors were replaced with alternates, and each time, the panel was told to begin deliberations anew.

The final panel had deliberated for around five hours on Wednesday and an additional three hours Friday.

Jurors had to decided whether Peterson killed his pregnant wife, Laci, who vanished Dec. 24, 2002, from their home in Modesto. He faced a second murder count in the death of the fetus, a boy the couple planned to name Conner.

The highly publicized trial began with jury selection in March and opening arguments in June. Closing arguments were presented Nov. 1 and 2 and the original panel began deliberating Nov. 3.

Prosecutors claimed Peterson killed Laci, then dumped her weighted body into San Francisco Bay, because he wanted to escape marriage and fatherhood. The remains of Laci and the fetus were discovered in April a few miles from where Peterson says he went fishing alone the day his wife vanished.

The defense contended someone else killed her and said prosecutors had never proven he had any motive to kill.

On Wednesday, Delucchi dismissed the jury foreman, a man in his mid-40s who has medical and law degrees. The judge did not disclose his reasoning.

The action came a day after the removal of another juror who apparently did her own research on the case, violating the judge's order to consider only evidence presented at trial.

While deliberations went on earlier this week, the drama shifted from the courtroom to a parking lot a few blocks away. Defense attorney Mark Geragos parked a replica boat there Monday after the deliberating jurors viewed the actual boat prosecutors allege Peterson used to dump his wife's body.

But the replica boat and its contents -- coveralls stuffed with weights and concrete anchors tied to the arms and legs -- quickly became a makeshift shrine, with candles, flowers and hand-lettered signs reading "Rot in Prison" and "Justice for Laci and Conner."

Geragos had hoped to show jurors a videotaped experiment performed by the defense during which the replica boat apparently filled with water, but the judge did not allow it.

TANNER'S MOM replied: I am so glad! But it is sad for Scott' s mom. No one would want to be the the mom of a person who murder his own child..how would you sleep at night.

I don't think any thing punshiment is good enuff....

MomToMany replied: I'm so glad he was found guilty. But no punishment will be enough for Laci and Connor.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: I believe that justice was done today. I'm so very happy that the verdict was guilty. I too believe that no punishment will be enough for what he did to Laci and Connor.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: I'm glad he was found guilty! That poor women and her baby, what a tragic thing to happen! I feel for both families today, this must be a very, very hard day for all of them!

Kaitlin'smom replied: good I hope he gets what he deserves

jcc64 replied: Good. Justice was served, but I really wish this story would go away. It's a tragedy, but people are murdered with great regularity, and I'm not sure why this particular one garnered so much attention. Is it b/c they were both attractive white people? I don't know, but the cable "news" networks are gonna have to find some other story to exploit ad nauseum. grrrrrrr.

MommyToAshley replied:
I never really understood why some cases get publicity and others don't. I think part of the media appeal was that Laci was pregnant. I didn't really follow the case, but I am glad that justice was served. I just hope that they are not able to appeal because of all the weirdness with the jurors.

Lollie replied: YAY!!! thumb.gif

I just very recently heard about this case and I sooo badly wanted the #&*%$# to be found guilty!!!!!
