vaccinations..did u know? - mmr combined with chicken pox vax

boyohboyohboy wrote: I just read in one of my baby mags. that the cdc is recalling their recommendations on the new mmr that contains the chicken pox vax.
I had no idea this thing even exhisted..it said that is has been linked to epilepsy and also seizures and death in many kids..
i also just found out that jake had this...i never knew it and my ped never told me that he was giving it to him that way!

i thought i would pass it on, in case i wasnt the only one.
i am leary as it is of mmr but now this!

it was in my american baby mag this month. i can see if i can find a link.

Boo&BugsMom replied: Thanks Stacy. I knew it existed, but our ped's office doesn't use it. They usually wait until after new things have been on the market for awhile before they issue things.

How sad and scary. ohmy.gif

mommy~to~a~bunch replied: Wow, I didn't even know they combined them! That is just downright scary! A link would be very helpful!

boyohboyohboy replied:
i know i am so mad at our old ped.
but what can i do now...

but the cdc said they no longer think its a good idea....

boyohboyohboy replied:
mollie, here is one i googled..i am trying to see if i can get the link to the one i read in american baby..but it said the same thing this does..

coasterqueen replied: Hmmm, our ped gives those two vax as seperate vax, but I'm not sure if they are given at the same time, kwim? Or am I getting confused. Gosh, I'm going to have to ask ours.

luvmykids replied:
This vax is a combo, one shot for both. But I wonder if the effects are the same regardless of one shot each or one for both?

Boo&BugsMom replied:
If I'm not mistaken, combo vax's have more preservatives in them. unsure.gif Not sure if I'm right, but that is what I always thought. Maybe I'm way off base. blush.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: i wonder if when they, whoever they are, come up with new ideas to combine these vax do the peds always tell the patients? or do they just assume they are doing you a favor by not giving you so many shots?
that was the reasoning behind the combo of mmr and chicken pox.
but then they started seeing the reactions...and just said oops better not do that..
I guess i am mad at myself for not asking more thorough questions with jake, but now i know for andrew...i am so glad i happened across that today.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Thanks for the info! I haven't had Allie in for her one year check up yet, and now I'm glad. I don't know if my ped is using that or not but now I know about it and can ask when I bring her in.

coasterqueen replied: Our PED has us sign a form every time he is giving vax to have the "ok" from the parents. Now with that being said ours wasn't very good at really explaining the vax to us (as new parents w/Kylie) and we just "took his word" and didn't realize that we ok'd the CP vax. But we signed for it, so that was negligence on our part at that time. Now I know to ask more.

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
That's what I feel most people do. They just take their doctor's word as gospel, without doing any sort of research on their own. Some parents don't even know which vaxes their child gets!! I don't understand that at all!

coasterqueen replied:
Well, I think that is common for first-time parents. I don't think any of us can say that we did everything perfect the first child around. happy.gif

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
I don't think it's just first time parents either. I've seen posts here from people who have more than one child who didn't know what shots their child had received.

I know *I* would want to know what was being injected into my child if they were going to get shots. Luckily they won't be getting any!

coasterqueen replied:
Well, maybe so. To each their own. biggrin.gif

MommyToAshley replied: I think vaccinations are important, it's especially important for those of us with healthy children to get the vaccinations so that those that can't get them for medical reasons aren't exposed to horrific diseases. But, that is my own personal belief, and I know not all feel the same way and everyone should do their own research and make their own educated decisions. My fear is that people are going to hear things like this and turn away from vaccinations all together and we may see the return of some very bad diseases. It's already starting to happen in some areas where a whole community has refused vaccinations. I think it is more important than ever for all of us to educate ourselves.

With that being said, I would not try a new vaccine. I am not sure if I will even try the one that is supposed to prevent cervical cancer when Ashley reaches the age of 13. In my eyes, that vaccine will still be pretty new.

Our ped was very good about explaining what vaxs were being given, we had to sign for them, and she didn't have a problem with spreading them out and not giving a ton at one time. I would be furious if my Ped gave a new vaccine and didn't explain what she was given. I am so sorry that happened to you and I am glad nothing bad came from it. Thank you for educating the rest of us so others will know to ask. If my ped had given the vax without my permission, I'd think about seeking legal ramifications or at least go to the medical board so that this doctor does not continue this practice.

mummy2girls replied: Here the ped doesnt give the shots. you have to go to health clinic to do it. And before they vacc your chuild they go over the vaccine they are giving them and possible side effects. They dont just inject and not tell you which ones they are giving... or ami reading that wrong?

so in the states you go for a check up for your child and if its time for thier shots they do it in the office? HMMM i find it interesting how it differs in the countries... Im not saying one way is better than the other. Maby if they did it thatw ay here it would save us trips and appointments... tongue.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Yes, here they do it in the doctor office unless you do not have insurance and/or cannot afford to have it done - then you can go to the health department to get them.

mummy2girls replied:
hmmm interesting:)

A&A'smommy replied: yikes I had know idea, I'm SOO nervous about VAX this time around I definitely want her to have them but some I am pretty Leary of

boyohboyohboy replied:
jessica, I have a really good vaccination schedule we used with andrew, he still gets them all, just at a much slower and spaced out pace, and he hasnt had one moment of pain or fever or any reactions..you wouldnt even know he had a shot.
if you are interested pm me and i will send you to the site where i got it.
i have had two peds now check this slower schedule and agree to it.

this way he never got more then two shots at one time. and he tolerated it great!

Boo&BugsMom replied:
The boys ped explains the vax's pretty well to us. If they are new, he tells us, but usually they do not use any new things unless they are on the market for quite some time. The nurse gives them the shots, while the doc steps out because he doesn't want the children to become afraid of him and associate him with getting shots. I always have to sign something, but I also always ask if the ones they are getting are merc. free...and they always say "yes, our office only uses merc free vax's", but I always ask anyways. I trust their doc, but I have a hard time trusting the manufacturers.

My2Beauties replied: Aubrey just had these shots and she got them seperate...thank goodness ohmy.gif I would be furious if my doc did that and did not explain it to me.

mommymommy replied: All of this talk about vaccines always makes me so nervous..I think they are very important and have read so many things for and against them that it really makes me think..However I go with my gut and trust my daughter's doctor which is important...Still, I hat to hear about things like this and it always has me second guessing
