But, how much do they cost you?
How many do you have?
How often do you clean them?
Do you clean them yourself or do you use a company?
Do you notice a money savings??

It makes me curious, and wonder if I could do it...

What about if she's at the baby sitters, would they have to keep the used ones to give back? Or would you expect them to wash them while she's there? Or would she have her own set?

Jackie012007 replied:
But, how much do they cost you? you can go super crazy expensive with cloth diapers, but I didn't! I haven't spent any more that $10 for a diaper, and a lot of them I got FFS or I traded xbox games carl had and beat for a bunch of them. I'd say we are about set and I've spent about $170 for all the diapers.

How many do you have? I still have some coming in the mail, but total I'd say we have a variety of about 35 diapers. I live in an apartment so I only do laundry once a week - I do rinse them when they are soiled, though.

How often do you clean them? With all-in-ones, I just rinse them and toss them in the wet bag when they are soiled. If they are pooped on, I plop the poop in the toilet and rinse them with detergent and then throw them in the wet bag. The pockets, I hand wash and hang to dry and reuse. Prefolds I rinse and then throw in the hamper. Since Carly has solid poops now, it's really easy to clean!

Do you clean them yourself or do you use a company? I clean them myself. I go to the laundromat every Friday night - I do the diaper seperate from everything else. I use a cup of white vinegar per load, a scoop of oxyclean, a capful of bleach to disinfect and then Purex All natural laundry detergent. All the fleece gets hung to dry and then rest of the diapers go in the dryer on high heat. If they aren't totally dry after once through the dryer, I will put them in again until they are dry.

Do you notice a money savings?? Not yet because it has only been a month. The initial start up cost was a lot, but now that I have my stash, I will never have to buy diapers again. Were were spending about $40 a month on disposibles, so in 3 more months we will be back at zero and the cloth diapers will have paid for themselves and from then on we will be saving $40 a month!

What about if she's at the baby sitters, would they have to keep the used ones to give back? Or would you expect them to wash them while she's there? Or would she have her own set? I am a SAHM so don't have to worry about a sitter. Both our parents cloth diapered us and they are the only ones who watch Carly so they have no problem with cloth diapering them and they always clean them for us, which is so nice! biggrin.gif But should she have to go to a sitter or something, if the person wasn't comfortable with cloth diapering her, I would have no problem with bringing disposies for them. CDing isn't for everyone and I wouldn't want to force it on someone who isn't comfortable - luckily for us, our parents loved cloth diapering! rolling_smile.gif

grapfruit replied:
Very interesting! smile.gif thumb.gif I like the savings idea, and honestly, it doesn't sound like a TON more work then disposable.

Something to think about for sure!!

Jackie012007 replied: yeah seriously - I am a very lazy person - LOL! The big motivation for me was Carly has had terrible rashes on her butt and hoo-ha and her bikini area... so that was worth it for me to switch. But seriously, it's not much more! We pay for garbage bags so now we have more room in our garbage bags for other stuff, and the most work is rinsing out the diapers - which you don't even have to do. I know people who just throw the pee diapers in the pail, and even just plop the poop in the toilet and then throw the soiled dipe in the hamper. I'm a freak about smell so I choose to hand wash them - but all I do is throw them in the bathroom sink striaght from her bum, fill it with super hot water and a dab of laundry detergent, then I bought a dish scrubbing brush that I use to swirl and scrub the dirty dipes in the sink. Then I squeeze them out, hang them to dry and clean my sink with hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle!

And I love how cute the diapers are - but I'm not one of those crazies that spends $100 on a custom diaper - that is just ludicrous!!

Calimama replied: I love the patterns!

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Ok I'm just wondering, are the diapers you bought the one size fits all size or will you have to buy new ones when she gets bigger? I'm also wondering how long they stay nice and soft - will they be getting ratty by the time she's out of diapers? I'm just asking because I've thought about CD'ing the next one but if you have to spend that much every time she goes up a size that would be too much for me, and if I washed them once a week with bleach and oxyclean you'd think they'd start to get worn out and I'd have to buy new ones because I hate scratchy cloth. blush.gif

DillsMommy replied: They are so cute. I didn't know they made patterns. thumb.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: love2.gif Love the covers! They are almost as cute as the girl!! love2.gif
Those boots and the diaper are all the rage this season, aren't they? laugh.gif

Sam & Abby's Mom replied: she's so adorable! I love those hot pink ones smile.gif

When I was a baby they didnt even have disposable diapers. My Mom cloth diapered all nine of us - at one point she didnt even have a dryer and had to hang dry them. wacko.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Wow. wacko.gif Well I guess that's what they did before the days of the washer and dryer, huh? tongue.gif I think I'm going to give my dryer a hug. laugh.gif

ETA Jackie I forgot to say in my other post that Carly looks so cute! I love the hotpink diaper cover. love2.gif

Jackie012007 replied:
I bought some OS, some mediums and some larges. Carly is kinda in between sizes. The cool thing is, as long as you take care of your diapers, you can either resell them, or trade them for the next size up.

As long as you don't wash and dry at extreme temperatures every time, and take care of your dipes, they last a LONG time. I've talked to moms who have 5 kids and have used the same set of diapers for each kid! ohmy.gif

ETA: I HATE icky fabrics too - I am very tactile. If you do ever CD I suggest getting cotton or PUL outers - fleece and flannel tend to pill over time. I have some microfleece diaper covers that I just air dry so they don't pill!

Jackie012007 replied:
LOL yeah those are her "camping" boots. Carl's parents have a huge camper (and by camper I mean something that is bigger and nicer than our apartment and has a/c and a stove and fridge rolleyes.gif ) so they bought her those boots for her birthday, to bring when we go camping with them. They are HUGE on her but she loves toddling around in them, LOL! She is SUCH a little stinkpot! wub.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Ok well then that's VERY cool! thumb.gif I didn't know you had actually gotten more than one size. I am actually getting closer and closer to considering it for my next baby (whenever that might be) just for the money savings. We've never had any problems with disposables but they are just so darn expensive - especially when you've got two in them. wacko.gif I don't know how long it'll be before Allie's potty trained so I don't know just how worth it it would be to make the plunge for her. tongue.gif It's not so bad now that Andrew's potty trained and we're not buying so many.
