seriously, this is terrible, i feel so sorry for this woman. if i weren't already a vegetarian, this sure would be enough to turn me into one.

A&A'smommy replied: YES me too!!! We haven't had any beef in our house for over a year
bluebear replied: fyi, things like that can happen with anything you eat.
DVFlyer replied: *cough* spinach *cough*
bluebear replied: yep. it's like when people say "I don't like going out to eat, you never know with the food, you can get sick." really? because you can get sick from the food at your own house too.
luvmykids replied: I read that article the other day, as I was trying to decide with the ground beef I'd thawed It sure did make me think twice, I had no idea how disgusting ground beef really is. No wonder it's so cheap
cameragirl21 replied: spinach did not make anyone paralyzed, just made them puke their guts out for a few days or so. And no it cannot happen with anything you eat, meat is specifically prone to this based on its chemistry, composition, and the way it's handled at slaughter houses. This is not just a little bit of food poisoning, it's someone who will never walk again because of the effect the tainted meat had on her body. And it can happen with deer meat too and any kind of meat. I've been eating sushi for years, so I'm technically a pescaterian and I know it too has its dangers but I absolutely love it and don't see myself giving it up. I do know of someone who was sick for six months from eating tainted sushi at Benihana of all places...you'd think that is a reputable place. Anyway, that didn't stop me from eating sushi but the day I hear it makes someone paralyzed or permanently harmed in any way is the day I stop eating raw fish.
bluebear replied: I didn't say anything about any food paralyzing anybody, nor was spinach mentioned about paralyzing. I said things like that (meaning illness or worse) can happen with any food. Contaminated soil and vegetables? e. coli? no food you eat is safe.
mom21kid2dogs replied: Ummm . . . .I beg to differ with you about this being a meat only issue. IIRC, Crystal's(Crystalina) adorable little niece died 2 years ago from eating tainted spinach in a salad. In fact, a small number of people in the US die each year from food borne illnesses that are definately not meat specfic. Some are preparation issues, some are improperly cleaned issues, improperly cooked issues, etc but you definately can die from a salad bar. I remember one case several years ago where a child died from watermelon on a salad bar. The restaurant used the same knife to cut up a variety of unwashed fruits and the child got Ecoli.
Most people who prepare deer run small butcher shops. I know the shop we use has a glass window directly into the prep room. We could sit and watch them process our deer if we wanted to. Not saying it's 100% safe either (although I'm pretty hard pressed to recall the last time I heard of a deer meat related death or injury:P ) but it's not mass produced so your chances of a food borne illness due to poor processing would seem to be far lower.
I'm not immune to this poor woman's plight but awful things happen every day. There are far more idiots on the road than I care to count, but I still drive. Every day is a crap shoot and if you get out OK at the end of it, it's a good day!
stella6979 replied: I absolutely agree.
bluebear replied: I agree!!
cameragirl21 replied: I was under the impression that they never knew for sure what caused Crystal's niece's tragic death. Anyway, not saying that meat is the only danger in this world but given the horrors that can come of eating it, I'm just glad I don't. And I view the tragic story in this article as one more reason not to eat it.
CantWait replied: There was just an article on yahoo about non-meat items being more harmful than meat.
BAC'sMom replied: I think I read the same article.
Although this is a very sad story it all boils down to a QC/QA problem in the Rendering Dept at that plant.
You get an Ecoli infection by coming into contact with the feces of humans or animals. But you can also get it from other foods that can be infected with Ecoli.
Raw milk or dairy products (it’s spread from a cow's udders to its milk)
Raw fruits and vegetables, lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, or unpasteurized apple cider or other unpasteurized juices (by coming into contact with infected animal feces)
You can also become infected when you drink from a contaminated water supply. Or by accidentally swallow contaminated water while swimming in a lake, pool, or water park.
Heck you can get it from a shopping cart if a infected person does not wash his or her hands well after a bowel movement.
Calimama replied: Gross. I read that earlier and had to put my ground turkey back in the fridge. Bleccch!
