User Submitted Born Free 5oz. Wide Neck- Twin Pack Reviews September 22, 2008 Great bottles Our 3-month-old has been using these bottles since he was one month old. The bottles don't leak at all and they don't cause gas. I can only guess that the ones who had leaking problems don't know how to screw a bottle cap on.
At least one reviewer (maybe it was on the larger bottles; I read through those reviews too) seems to think the bubbles rising through the milk as the baby eats the milk is a bad sign. They apparently didn't go through any physics classes on their way to their G.E.D. If there weren't bubbles then a vacuum would develop behind the milk making it harder and harder to suck the milk out. So the bubbles are entirely necessary to equalize the pressure inside the bottle with the outside.
We plan to buy the larger bottles when he gets older and I might change my opinion then, based on what I'm seeing in the reviews about the nipples that allow more flow. But for our newborn, these bottles have been great.
September 9, 2008 If your baby sucks too hard and coughs and gags...... My newborn has a voracious appetite, and would suck so hard that she would end up coughing and gagging at every feeding! It got to the point that I was nervous every time I fed her! Then I realized that she only did that with the Medela nipples (I had bought both the Medela nipples, which I had placed on Evenflo glass bottles, as well as the BornFree bottles in order to have several options). As soon as I went back to the BornFree bottles, even though she continued to suck hard, she no longer coughed and gagged!! SO IF YOUR BABY COUGHS AND GAGS WITH FEEDINGS, GET THESE! YOU WON'T BE SORRY! Also, regarding the review that stated that the bottles "morphed into blobs", she MUST have been doing SOMETHING wrong as far as the microwave sterilization is concerned (?maybe not adding water), because that definitely does NOT happen! (Best bet is to use the Born Free microwave sterilizer.) Also, as far as customer service, I also had a good experience - I had e-mailed them requesting instructions for the sterilizer, and received a very quick response! Overall, an EXCELLENT product, WELL WORTH THE $$$!
August 21, 2008 love them! i love my born free bottles! i had dr browns before because of the gassiness, but when i found out these were BPA free and Dr Browns didnt have any at the time, i made the switch. When i wrote DR Browns a letter they basically told me that the BPA thing was overblown and had no backing to it. Then why are you making bpa-free bottles now? Anyway my baby has been less gassy since we switched to these and i like that i am doing something good for him. Also they are easier to clean than the Dr. Browns. They always had an orange residue left on the vent. Never had that problem with these bottles. They are worth the $$. He loves to hold them himself too, even though they are wider, he is getting the hang of it, although mommy still holds onto the ends to keep it straight!
August 13, 2008 Awesome customer service, Great product I rarely write reviews but I had to comment on the fantastic customer service I received from Born Free. Like a lot of mothers, I recently switched from Avent to this BPA-free line of bottles by Born Free. I purchased 3 x 3 packs from a bricks and mortar retailer. The packets contained one venting system and a coupon for two more. The retailer was out of them and I am leaving for a trip at the end of the week. I emailed Born Free customer service. 48 hours later I am holding the vents in my hand, they also sent me some nipples, they overnighted everything (at their expense) so I could have them in time for my trip. I didn't know customer service like this existed any more. Overall, I am delighted with the product- fewer leaks than Avent, no concern about plastics, and my one year old took to the bottles like a duck to water. Highly recommended.
August 4, 2008 Not too bad! I traded in my Avent bottles for Born Free after the huge BPA news stories. I don't think I would have paid for them if I had to buy them all brand new at once, but since I was getting credit, I decided to try them. I don't think the one extra valve piece is really that big of a deal - they're still less complicated than Dr. Brown's! I haven't had any leaking problems or melting problems (even in the dishwasher). I did have one crack when my daughter dropped it on a tile floor. I was lucky enough to be able to exchange it, but I would like them to be a little more sturdy -- especially now that my daughter is old enough to throw things she doesn't want! :) Overall, I'm happy I made the decision to switch, and they've worked fine for our family. But $8-$10 a bottle? Seriously?
August 3, 2008 Great product, great customer service! I am a little puzzled by the most recent reviews of these Born Free bottles. I have had no problems at all with the bottle leaking except if I didn't screw the cap on well (although be careful not to screw the cap on TOO tightly - if you do that you can close off the venting system) While the 5 piece system is more effort to clean, it's well worth it as the venting system is superior to other bottles that we have used.
With regards to customer service, I contacted them last week via the form on their website (www.newbornfree.com) and received a response the next business day. The response was friendly and very informative and when the information provided did not solve my problem, they promptly mailed out replacement parts for me at no-cost. To be honest, I was a little shocked at how GREAT their customer service was - in a day and age of automated responses or outsourced customer service, this was a refreshing change!
Needless to say, we're going to buy the next level of nipples and move up to their 9 oz bottles when the time comes!
July 23, 2008 Leaks like crazy and has annoying extra parts These bottles, which are obviously selling well because of the Bisphenol-A issues, leak like crazy. All you have to do is tip the bottle sideways and the milk comes gushing out like crazy. Makes a huge and annoying sticky mess. My advice, if you must absolutely have these, is to use the Avent nipples on these bottles. They fit and they don't leak at all, even upside-down. The silicone nipple is not implicated in the Bisphenol problems. The Born Free bottles also have a silicone gasket and a plastic insert, making cleaning and filling the bottles very frustrating and unnecessarily complex. I am hoping someone else comes up with a better BSA-free bottle because these are just not working for me.
July 21, 2008 Potentially dangerous...and worst customer service EVER! I happily bought six of the larger BornFree bottles from Amazon, since I was looking for BPA-free products. The bottles morphed into unrecognizable white and crystallized blobs, one after the other (I stopped using them when this happened with the third one). They all started out with a small white mark near the mouth of the bottle, and did the bizarre morphing thing soon afterwards. I had the bottles in the microwave sterilizer with othrs (Dr. Brown and Avent), none one of which had any problems.
I would love to post a photo of the blob because I am convinced that anything that could turn into THAT cannot be good for my baby. I would make the same case for any BornFree product.
The worst was that I could not get a response from the company. I wrote emails, I spoke to one of their customer service reps, wrote more emails...and nothing came of any of it. I then reported to the Better Business Bureau in their region (Louisiana), which wrote me back several weeks later to say that THEY had not gotten any response from the company either.
My daughter is the most precious thing in the world to me...would I trust her well-being to a company that produces a flawed product and THEN refuses to respond to legitimate concerns, even from the Better Business Bureau? HECK, NO! I would urge everyone to take care before buying this bottle.
July 7, 2008 Works for our newborn! We tried these after our daughter didn't like/couldn't get good suction with Adiri bottles. She is a month old, and so far, these bottles are great. No leaks, no nipple confusion (which was a big concern of mine), no more burp up/gas than when I breast feed her directly (as opposed to expressing milk so my husband can feed her a bottle). Very expensive, but actually cheaper than the Adiri bottles. If you are concerned about bpa and can afford the high price, then these bottles are great! I strongly recommend them.
June 30, 2008 these bottles are great I bought these bottles for my 3rd child after using Advent for the first two. Although expensive, these bottles work great. My son can drink the whole bottle without me having to stop in-between to burp him. He took to them very quickly after being breastfed for the first 5 mos of his life. I had read in some reviews that people had their bottles break when dropped but I have not had this problem, even after dropping one on our driveway. I would highly recommend these bottles.
