User Submitted Evenflo SimpleStep Pressure Gate Taupe Reviews January 6, 2009 good gate for the price The gate is easy to install but the handle does stick a little and the gate still moves when you open/ close it. Not terrific one-handed but does the job I need it to; blocking the bottom of stairs safely from my 2 kids.
January 6, 2009 Horrible unsteady gate! This gate is horrible. I cannot find a way of making it tight because it requires that you loosen the pressure mounts so the door has 1/8th of an inch room so you can slide the handle to unlock it. In order for our gate to reach the 1/8th of an inch we had to loosen the pressure mounts so much that there is no way it would stay in place with my 12m old pulling on it!! Not only did we have issues with that but it is REALLY difficult to open! There is no way my 8yo can unlock the gate and even I'm having a lot of trouble. Save your money and purchase something different. We'll be returning this gate.
December 31, 2008 Difficult to open and close We are using this gate more as a pet barrier than child gate. As a mother of 3 boys, I've installed lots of gates. This one does install very quickly. But I keep wondering if I've done something wrong... if I tighten the upper adjusters as tight as possible, it becomes much more difficult to open and close the gate.
As other reviewers have noted, it is not simple to open. You need to squeeze small buttons on opposite sides of the latch, then pull the handle back. I'm an average size woman, and I need two hands to do it. If I loosen the upper adjusters as the instructions indicate, so there is a 1/8" gap between the two sides of the latch, the gate is not as securely mounted. Ours is in a wood-framed doorway so good pressure is possible if it didn't make the latch so difficult to operate. Not sure if I'll be keeping it.
December 31, 2008 Excellent product! We have this gate between our kitchen and living room and we LOVE it! We have used it for about 9 months so far (from the time my child could crawl through 15 months). It opens in either direction and it will stay all the way open when you want it to, which is really nice for when your child is in bed and you don't need to gate closed. You push it shut behind you and it easily shuts on its own. It is extremely sturdy and durable. It never once came down and my son hangs from it like a monkey. The surface is easy to clean and it does not scratch or get marked up. There is no where for any fingers to get pinched, which was very important to me. There is nothing to step on for a kid to use to climb over. It is not hard to take down if you need to - or to put back up. You only need one hand to open it. Most adults coming to our house had to be shown how to open it once, but then they got it. It would be very hard for a toddler to figure out how to open it because there is a little button on each side of the latch that you squeeze with your thumb and fore finger while sliding the latch back. It would be very hard for a toddler to get their hand up and around the latch and squeeze with enough force, while sliding it back to get it open.
December 24, 2008 Simple Step Pressure Gate Great product. It's really nice to have to gate to open rather than taking the whole contraption down, as with other gates. This has helped a lot in corralling the five dogs and two cats in my house! Will definitely buy another one if I ever need to. :]
December 23, 2008 it's great when my kids don't tear it down! I have this at the top of the stairs so my son won't fall down and it works great when my kids don't wiggle it loose. You can open and close one handed after you break it in and it is pretty durable. But as I said my kids have gotten it loose twice so far so it is unpredictable. I know it's not an installation error because my husband is superman when it comes to installing safety items around the house for the kids!
December 20, 2008 Useful as Pet Gate - except for very small pets Our Norwich terrier puppy at less than 10 lbs could wiggle though the gate, now that she's a little bigger she doesn't try that anymore. This gate is not that simple to open but adults get the system after a couple of tries! Suits our needs just fine.
December 18, 2008 So So Gate This gate went up with no problem, i was replacing a different Evenflo gate that i had that broke. I use this gate in my hallway. Last night my kids were running around and the gate was open, well my daughter hit her eye on the gate and has a very big black and blue on her face, one millermetter more and i would have been in the ER with her with a major eye injury. When the gate is left open there is a hard point of the gate that is exposed (this is realy hard to explain). I think this gate would be perfect if it had some type of rubber or something soft on the top rail of the gate. Right now i have a thick washcloth wraped around the exposed metal point of the gate. I will be shopping around for a safer gate after Christmas.
December 13, 2008 Nice, but limited sizing range. Be sure to carefully measure the intended opening, and avoid if you plan to use in more than one specific location. Not sure what a "standard" door opening should be, but it fits in none of mine. Latch is difficult to open even for an adult, so should have no trouble fooling your toddler. Seems well constructed, and once fitted locks in place well.
December 2, 2008 Great product Great quality, delivered very quickly. Arrived in great shape. Definitely would purchase this again, the price was awesome too.
