Touch Free pail
For our fist child we had the diaper genie and I always hated it for the changing of the cartdrige that bags the diapers. The smell from that one was always toxic. I really like this one and have only replaced the batteries twice and our daughter is almost 7 months old.

The one problem I'm having is locating places that sell the filters, I find if these get replaced regularily the smell is almost none existant.

Better than the diaper champ and worth the money.
I got this pail reluctantly since there were so many terrible reviews about this one and most people praised the diaper champ. I got it because I was able to get it free through a work incentive program, so i thought I'd try it out. Now that i have it, i would have paid the $50 or so for it.

My daughter is 3 months old now and I haven't had to change the batteries yet. I can use the target stretchy grocery bags in it... i'm sure you can use others but those tie the tightest when i have to throw the diapers out. I love the touch free aspect so you don't have to let go of the baby on the changing table to throw away the diaper.

As far as the smell goes... there is none! We are in a small apartment and have it in our bedroom and haven't smelled the dirty diapers once. However, when we went to visit a friend who has a baby the same age as ours. We used their "diaper champ" and both my husband and I noticed that their diaper pail smelled bad and didn't like having to reach over to turn the handle thing.

Some other negative comments people have made about it are that you have to empty the diapers frequently. I only have had to change it every couple days at the beginning when you change a million diapers a day, and now that we're changing diapers less, i probably empty it once or twice a week. Besides, i don't like to have dirty diapers sitting in my house a long time anyways.

I've noticed that this pail is not available at BRU or Amazon anymore, I am glad we got one and I hope they show up at the stores again soon.

Love it!
We've had this diaper pail for 5.5 months now and we love it! It has always opened/closed just fine. This is our main diaper pail (I'm home with baby all day) and we still haven't had to replace the batteries. My only complaint is that it is a little bit small...we have to empty it twice a week. Then again, if it was bigger the bag of diapers would be very heavy. The filter is now wearing out, which causes the pail to stink, but I'm confident the smell will go away when we replace the filter (now if I could just find one...)

DO NOT BUY! PIECE OF JUNK.
This thing did not work at all. We double checked to make sure the batteries were in properly. Opened the lid by hand, and it would close on it's own, but the sensor would not open the lid ever. Useless. Also, the off white/ beige color is pretty ugly, in my opinion. We only got it because of the automatic lid. Later, we looked up reviews of this product on Amazon and saw many other people had the same problem. Wish we had done our research first. Hopefully Graco gets these reviews and takes it off the market.

sucks
The 1st one I bought only opened 1/2 the time. I returned it and got a replacement which never opened at all. A piece of SHT!!!

Low quality, poor design
We recently purchased one of these and had to return it immediately. I wish we had read these reviews first! The touch-free sensor didn't work at all (yes, the batteries were installed correctly), so the lid would not open unless you manually lifted it. I agree with previous reviews that the battery compartment is of particularly poor design, the need to remove three screws to replace the batteries is a hassle. I'm glad we didn't keep it long enough to realize how fast the batteries wear out. Avoid this product!

Does not work
This product does not work. We own an automatic-opening trash can that we use in our kitchen and that has worked fine for over a year. It's too bad that this company could not get a similar technology to work. I can't imagine that this product has not been recalled or discontinued yet.

Poor design and breaks quickly!
Although this was a great concept, it isn't perfect.

Ours broke after just 6 weeks of use. The lid no longer opens and closes. The gears inside stripped from my older child manually opening it once. We have had it more than 30 days, so we can't return it and who wants to return a stinky diaper pail?

As another reviewer mentioned, the lid has to be taken off and screws undone to replace the 'D' batteries. This battery cover is a little too close to where the diapers travel through, so it is a really gross process.

Our pail will hold about a half of a week of diapers. They should be emptied more often than this anyway.

The ball part inside that holds the diaper and then drops it in the trash can gets gross, no matter how hard you try to be careful and contain the mess.

And the smell! It does absolutely nothing for the smell no matter how many of their filters you buy. There is the constant smell leaking from it, but when you open the pail to put in a diaper you just want to go running from the room before the smell overwhelms you.

I wish I had saved my money and just bought a trash can.

Parodistically horrible
You'd think that a diaper pail with a power-driven lid would come with an electrical cord, right? Wrong. This junker requires four D batteries that need to be replaced once or twice EACH WEEK.

But wait; there's more! Installing new batteries requires taking off the smelly lid and unscrewing THREE small Phillips-head screws that hold the unwieldy battery cover in place!

You couldn't come up with a stupider design if you tried.

A little stinky
I purchased this diaper pail recently, I've used the Diaper Genie with my other 3 children, thinking the hands free option would be great. It is a great idea but they need to work on sealing the smell every time the lid opens. At first it was okay but after a while it got to be too much. I went out a few days ago and purchased the Diaper Genie II, I'm sure it will work just as well as the original. As a note, I've tried a few different brands and I've always come back to the Diaper Genie, it definitely is the best at keeping the odors locked in.
