This humidifier simply does not work.
I love writing reviews of great products. Unfortunately in this case I have to write a clinker. This is a classic example of something that is created to "look" like it should do something, but does nothing. I think the main problem is that the water tray is so undersized that there is never enough water supplied to soak the evaporator pad. As someone else posted (maybe under the Duracraft branded version), the pad gets damp maybe a couple inches up, but otherwise remains dry. As a result the humidifier just doesn't do anything of any significance. I have a humidistat and have owned Hunter and Duracraft humidifiers in the past that worked, so I am qualified to make this evaluation.

I tried shimming up one end of the unit hoping that it might supply more water to the pad, but that did not help. Maybe the pad they supply is just too robust or is over-treated so that it will not soak up enough water, I don't know. But, I do know that this unit does not do much of anything but make noise. Even on low it is a louder than it ought to be. I should add that is is in a small bedroom maybe 12 x 10.

I decided to return this and purchase a Vicks model V3100 1.0 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier. Now that model works as you would expect a small room humidifier to work, and on low it just whispers. The Vicks is a much better choice for a small room.

Worthy buy.
Like others said....this is great for a kids room, but we also used it for ours as well.
The low setting really isn't that loud, and the high setting is a great 'white noise' maker for kiddos (or hubbies that are used to the sound of a fan during summer months ;p).
And while this may not be the greatest humidifier ever, it is kind of a 'get what you pay for' scnerio.
Ie for us, at least, it was money well spent.

LOUD and hard to clean
We had a week of -30 degree temps and the indoor humidity dropped to nothing, so I bought this model at a local Ace Hardware store that happened to be open late. It has two settings: hi and low, they should be marked Very Loud and Extremely Loud. We couldn't even hear the TV over the racket. Forget about using it at night unless you live on the freeway and can sleep through anything.

After two days we took it back to the store. It was difficult to clean, and in only two days got a musty smell that would have been a nasty thing to try to live with. Now I'm looking for something better. Maybe just a pot of water on the stove is the easiest and best thing.

Awesome
Love it! Love it! Love it! I love this humidifier because it acts as a great noise maker. I mean if you have it on you can't hear anything outside your bedroom. I have it in my daughter's room so we can still have the TV loud and make noise and she doesn't wake up. Great for kids room.

Unacceptably noisy
We bought two of this model, but used them only one night before returning them. The fan was so loud it sounded as though we were listening to a room air conditioning unit in a cheap motel.
