User Submitted Medela Breast Pump Reviews October 15, 2008 Not Worth the Money I have a love-hate relationship with this pump. Most of the time I hate it. Here are the reasons why I love it: its small, portable, has good suction (well, I have nothing to compare it to but it gets the milk out), it has a timer on the display.
Here's why I hate it. It is so stinking loud. This pump was supposed to be designed for working women or busy women who need an extra hand around the house. Well, I have a hard time being able to make a business phone call when the all the person hears on the other end is "WAH-WAH-WAH" or as I affectionately put it, "MOO-MOO-MOO." Honestly, I didn't think it would bother me at first, but when you have to listen to it multiple times a day for 10-15 minutes at a time, it gets really, really annoying.
Here's why I hate it even more. There are so many parts and pieces to this pump you need an extra 5-10 minutes for clean up. There are also a lot of nookes and crannies in all of these parts and pieces that need to be cleaned, and they better be cleaned or else it will grow mold. Isn't that a lovely thought to think of your pumped breastmilk (which we all know is worth GOLD) being centrifuged with mold. Disgusting.
Like the off-key tune of Cher "If I Could Turn Back Time..." I would have bought the pump in style advance and waited for medela to perfect this product a little better.
October 6, 2008 A great pump I finally convinced myself that I deserved this pump, and I'm so glad I did. It is worlds better than the Pump In Style Advanced which I used for my first two kids.
Pros: 1. Super light and small 2. Good, strong, adjustable pump 3. Pump attaches to your belt/waist so you can walk around while pumping 4. Helpful digital display of pump level and time 5. BPA-free, and comes with 4 BPA-free Medela bottles 6. Stylish, light tote bag
Cons: 1. Loud motor 2. The hands-free setup is terrible (but you can pump hands-free really easily with this pump by getting the Easy Expressions Bustier) 3. The price (though if you search around you can find it for as little as $270)
Overall, I think this is a great pump and would highly recommend it.
September 30, 2008 Effective and Small I haven't had the Freestyle for long, but am pleased with its effectiveness at getting the liquid gold out. I appreciate the flat backs on the new-style connectors - they allow me to use my arm to hold the shields in place. I've been able to go hands free and do some simple things around the house - amazing! I also like the small size, the portability, and the rechargeable battery.
A few drawbacks - short tubing means the pump has to sit in my lap while I pump and the tubing and connectors from my other Medela pumps don't work with the Freestyle. When I used the Symphony and Pump in Style, I bought an extra set of connectors so I didn't have to wash as often - now they're useless with the Freestyle. As I said earlier, I appreciate the new style connector, but wish the old style still fit.
September 16, 2008 Pump works and Medela's customer svc is very good My child is 6 months old and I've been using this pump with good results since she was one week old. I've been back at work full time for 3 months. Pump is nice and light, and the hands-free adapters work well. It's great to not need a wall/car outlet. Have no prev experience with pumps to compare to.
More impressive than the pump has been Medela's customer service. I have called them twice, and both times was quickly able to speak to a courteous human who mailed out a replacement part that same day (today it's the power cord that has gotten unreliable; one month ago i asked them to send me the replacement vinyl-free cooler they now have available).
So I would recommend this product and this company. This seller seems to be selling the pump for quite a lot; I think better prices can be found via other vendors.
September 5, 2008 Love This Pump!!! This pump is the best out there. I looked for a pump throught my whole pregnancy and really tried to get a good one with all of the double pumping features. When I found this product I thought that it was to expensive but looked very convinient to take around. I decided to get it and when it got here I was amazed on how light the pump is and how powerful the litte thing is. I take it everywhere I go and I am able to pump anywhere. The pump isnt as loud as I thought and I dont have to carry around the big bulky bag like the PIS. I also like that the parts are much easier to clean. The bag is so discreet no one even knows you have a pump, and it is so small you can also carry it in your diaper bag. I would recommend this product to any active and working mom. FYI you can get this pump for half the price somewhere else make sure you research the websites.
September 5, 2008 Fabulous pump! I love this pump! It's the only one I've ever used, so I can't compare it to any other pump. I love how convienent it is to pump anywhere. I've pumped in the craziest places - airplanes, airports, a baseball stadium, in the car, while driving (maybe not the safest...), the list goes on. It's small and quiet so I can pump and be inconspicuous. This is very important to me as I am a pumping-only mother. I am (unfortunately) not breastfeeding my baby.
The rechargable battery holds for several pumpings, but I do make sure to plug it in and recharge it if I know I'm leaving the house. I had a problem with the battery a few months ago and called Medela. They sent out a replacement battery pronto free of charge and no questions asked.
The bag is very nice and I don't mind carrying it around.
I gave it four stars because the hands free straps don't work so well for me. I had no problem finding a bra that works with it. I bought one at Motherhood Maternity for $15. It hooks up just fine and stays in place. The problem that I had was that I would never get as much milk out when I used the hands free system. The way it holds the shields to my breasts caused some ducts to not flow. I ended up getting an Easy Expressions pumping bra and that is working much better. The belt that comes with the Freestyle is very handy for walking around while pumping.
Overall a great pump and worth the price. Shop around on the internet for a good price with an authorized dealer. Medela's website lists authorized dealers.
August 8, 2008 So happy I choose this pump! I had a hard time deciding between the Freestyle and the Pump In Style Advanced. I think I made the correct choice. It works just as efficiently as my rental pump. I will admit that it is not as comfortable as the Symphony, but I believe that is to be expected. It is also a little louder than the Symphony, but comparable to noise from the old handed down Pump In Style I was using previously. The best features are it's size, rechargable battery, portability (I pump 3-4 times a day at work and home), and the parts. The parts are so much better than the other Medela pumps. I love that there are no tiny little valves to lose. The hands free kit works great with my Bravado flap bras. I wish there was a way to convert the hands free kit to work with my Medela sleep bras and nursing tanks. I would highly recommend this product. I would suggest purchasing it from a authorized dealer as I found that they have the best prices and the more knowledgeable staff if you need help troubleshooting.
August 4, 2008 Best "splurge" purchase I made! There's a lot of things we "need" to purchase on the arrival of a baby so naturally we need to be sure what we are spending our dollars on. I wasn't sure what to do about a breast pump but in the end I made a splurge purchase and got this. Wow, was it ever the right decision! This is a fabulous pump! I had trouble post-partum with getting my milk to come in and to get the supply up. Using this pump saved my milk, my sanity and satisfied my son's food requirements.
It extracts the milk well. It's small and light. It plugs in to the wall to recharge or you can use it directly off the mains. The parts are easy to assemble and clean (important when you're operating on a severe lack of sleep!). The time counter is very handy (even my lactation consultant was impressed).
I have non-Medela bras (Emma-Jane) and the hands free kit works just fine with them (in repsponse to another reviewer who said they only work with Medela bras). There are a couple of different attachment types included so that you can try it with different types of bra fasteners.
July 31, 2008 Great Pump!!! This pump is great!!! I was using the pump in style advanced and decided I would try the free style. It is very light weight and portable and comes with less parts than the pump in style, making it easier to clean. I love that it is rechargable because the pump in style was killing me with 8 AA batteries. It comes in a nice shoulder bag and all the parts fit, where as the PIS backpack always seemed to be packed full and was extremely heavy. The only thing is the hands free parts are a little complicated at first but after a few trys I had it down pat. I use the Bravado nursing bras and it attaches great to them. I dreaded pumping for those long 15 minutes but now that I am hands free I find myself looking at the timer and it is 20 minutes or more. It is so convienent, you can do so many things while pumping. Last night I washed dishes and put my 2 year old in the bath (IMAGINE THAT) You do look alittle crazy withall the attachments hooked up but it is well worth it. I got this great pump for $[...] and free shipping so look around the internet before you purchase it for the outstanding price of $[...].
June 27, 2008 I love it! I love this pump. It's super fast to use, efficient to clean, it's very light and portable, and the hands free rocks. In response to another poster - I don't have any Medela bras and it works all of mine except the ones that snap. There are adapters to make it work with difference types of bras. My only complaint is that it's a bit loud. I used the Isis IQ Duo for 3 months and switched to this one. I couldn't be happier with the product.
