User Submitted Melissa & Doug Deluxe Bug Jug Fill & Spill Soft Baby Toy Reviews November 11, 2008 Best infant toy I've found! This is one of my son's favorite toys, and has been since he was three months old. Two of the bugs (the spider and the grasshopper) have long skinny legs that are the perfect size for tiny fists to clench, and all the toys are so lightweight that they were easy for him to wave in the air even at three months. The spider was the first toy he learned to play with. The textures, sounds, and colors are fun too--and now that he's almost eight months he likes playing with the jar as well, though he hasn't figured out how to "fill and spill" yet. That fun still lies ahead, making this a long-lived toy.
The bugs are also convenient for me--they're easy to squash into a stuffed diaper bag for traveling, and, though I haven't tried it yet, they're actually machine washable!! Amazing. If I were more ambitious, perhaps I'd sew loops onto them so they could dangle from the gym or the car seat handle, but I think they're versatile enough as they are. A fantastic buy. I imagine the other Melissa and Doug Fill and Spill sets are fun too, but I would definitely choose this one again because of the little legs being so easy for small hands to grab onto.
September 24, 2008 Bug Jug Fill & spill Do Melissa and Doug ever strike out??? Not this time!!! Since I work with developmentally delayed babies and toddlers, I've found this a great toy for the child who likes dump and fill, but would benefit from experience using both hands in a coordinated effort. The cute jug must be held with one hand while the other goes into the jug and pulls out the bug. It takes problem solving and digit strength. The bugs are adorable and very sturdy. Each one has a different attribute (rattle, crinkle, etc.) Also great for play and labeling.
July 2, 2008 Great toy! My daughter loves the bugs, but she also loves the texture of the "jug." It's really a great product and a good price.
June 24, 2008 Favorite Toy My baby loves these bugs. She can hold onto them at 4 months. She doesn't fill or spill yet, but she likes rattling, squeaking and chewing on them. They are soft, durable, and absolutely adorable.
June 2, 2008 Definately a baby's toy. This was a very cute baby gift although make sure you buy it for a baby. I made the mistake of buying it for my 1 year old nephew and he had no intrest in it and neither did the other kids his age. I would think that this toy would go over better with a baby around 6-9 months.
May 21, 2008 Cutest bugs! Bought these for my nine month old granddaughter. She hasn't figured out how to put them in the jug, but she loves playing with the bugs! They provide sensory stimulation and are easy to hold on to.
My only comment is that the opening of the jug should have been made a little bigger. Once the bugs are in there, they can't "spill".
May 12, 2008 Best Bet...Bugs! My daughter is 9 months old and she loved the Melissa and Doug Fill and Spill Lunchbox so much that I bought her this as well. This is as good - maybe even better - than the lunch box.
The bugs all have at least one "manipulative" element: - grasshopper - legs to grab, corduroy tummy, knotty antenna, crinkly wings, rattler - spider - lots of legs to grab, corduroy tummy, jingly thing - lady bug - crinkly wings, corduroy tummy, knotty antenna, squeeker - butterfly - crinkly wings, corduroy tummy, knotty antenna, rattler
The "jar" also has a mesh fabric top (like a real bug jar) which is another sensory element that adds to the fun. My daughter loves pulling all the bugs out of the jar one by one and then offering them to my husband or I so she can have a free hand to pull out another one.
This is my new go-to present for all 1st birthday parties!
February 2, 2008 Fun with our My son is 5 months old and loves these colorful bugs. There 4 bugs total. One of the bugs rattles. Two of the bugs have crinkle fabric and the 4th bug has a squeaker in it. He isn't to the stage where he puts the bugs back in the jug YET--but when he does get to "that" stage, the top of the bug jug is easily accessible. If you are looking for a toy not made in China this a is a FABULOUS option. The Bug Jug is made in Vietnam. I literally had to call a small independent toy store and they said you have to check the individual toy for its origin. Melissa & Doug toys vary on their origin.
I rated the durability a 4 because they toys have stayed in great condition while my son has pulled, "gummed" and in general played with these toys. I have yet to wash them and don't know how well they will hold up. The instructions say I can put them in the washer...but we will see.
I thought the price (close to $[...]) was a bit pricey, but he loves this toy. The "non-China" factor, his love for this toy and future educational purposes make this toy worth the price. We actually carry the bugs--without the jug--in his diaper bag as little toys for him when we are out and about.
December 10, 2007 Cuter than the picture! I am a fan of Melissa and Doug products so I thought I would try this one for my new baby who is almost 6 months now. It is GREAT! Each bug has a different texture/sound and they fit easily into the container creating an entirely soft flexible toy for the little ones. The tag says you can wash the bugs too which I like ;) It is also bigger than I expected, a little pricey but worth it and I will now buy the flower version for my niece!
