Imported from Denmark, this stylish Safeway Gates is ideal for stairways, halls, entryways or any high traffic location. Made of WHITE, plastic coated metal, it has a door that swings in either direction and a latch that's easy one handed operation. It is VERY easy to completely remove for special occasions.
User Submitted Safeway Wall Mount Top of Stairs Gate Reviews November 2, 2008 Faulty template included Instructions OK except that the template for making the holes in the wall did not correspond to the actual distance needed for the holes to fit the gate. Disregard the template and measure the distance to get the holes in the correct places.
The gate is easy to remove, when not needed, and easy to handle when installed.
October 21, 2008 Buy new screws I am still in the process of putting this gate up. I live in an older farm home and unfortunately the top of the steps are not even. The pattern didn't work and I need to re-align the gate to make it work. I was surprised that when receiving the gate it had rust marks on it. I am hoping with some cleaner it will clean up. It is not bad, but it is brand new!!! Also, I had 3 of the 8 wood screws heads break off while trying to put them on with my small hand drill. I was surprised they would break off that easily!!! I went to a local hardware store and purchased new ones. Alot of the reviews were correct in saying that you need to read directions first!!! I consider myself "handy", but you really need to read the directions and look at the pictures carefully. Once I have this gate on I will probably be happy with it, but the couple problems which I have encountered are very surprising!
October 13, 2008 Great gate With the included templates this gate was easier to install than the wood one I had previously. It is secure and the lock is easy to use. I would buy it again.
Only downside is the silver hardware with a black gate looks out of place.
September 27, 2008 Love it! Buying two more. We love this safety gate! We have tried a bunch at others' houses, even top brands, but they were all hard to use and ugly. This one is easy to open and shut with one hand, and my husband said it was really easy to install--only 20 minutes with a drill. All the young children (<5) we have had over for visits (probably 15-20 by now) have not been able to work the gate, even after they understand how it is done.
The railings are thin, which means it blends in to our house so much that people don't even notice it until they need to use the stairs. My daughter and even some 40lb children have rattled and leaned on it, but it didn't cause any problem at all. Also, the damage to the wall where the screws go in is really minor--we'll be able to patch it up easily when we're finished.
We knew we needed permanent gates because our two stairways are fairly steep, but we didn't want huge ugly gates marring our main entry. We also needed gates that would last and take a beating, because we know we'll have more kids. We found the perfect solution with this safety gate!
August 15, 2008 .gate review Directions did not come in the box, so I had to print them off the internet. Directions were somewhat confusing. Gate is not really easy to open with one hand. I have this gate to blocks steps on my deck. It serves its purpose.
August 14, 2008 KidCo G20 stair gate for pets Advertised as a child gate, but it is perfect to separate the adult dogs from the cat food. The cats can go through it and under it, the dogs cannot.
July 28, 2008 great purchase We bought this as a replacement for a gate my 4 year old couldn't open and close- the baby (11 months) kept getting out and even fell down the stairs once. Whew, this one is so much better! It looks much nicer and feels tons sturdier than the plastic ones and is not too hard for my 4 year old to open. She's happy, we're happy, the baby is happy (unless we're on the opposite side) :) We were able to mount it on the bannister on both sides. We just put a decorative molding on one side to attach the latch to. Only complaint is the supports that hold the hinges to the wall/bannister/whatever are plastic and I'm afraid they might not hold up- our 4 year old likes to hang on the gate and swing, which hopefully will stop soon. One of the consumer pictures I saw showed a different latch than what we have, so be careful.
July 25, 2008 Good engineering, poor manufacturing quality This was the only gate that I found that met the needs we had for a top and bottom of the stairs gate. I've been very happy with the functioning of the gate and its looks.
Based on other reviews I was very meticulous with following the instructions. I found the instructions to be descriptive enough with the inclusion of the pictures. It would have been nice if the pictures were on the same page as the instruction text. I imagine it was done that way so that the pictures didn't have to be reprinted for each language.
I really like the engineering of the gate. It's metal and there's good attention to detail on the mounting points. It works well and it's relatively simple. I chose to purchase the stair mounting kit and wall mounting kit to make it as sturdy as possible.
The problem was with the manufacturing quality and its what I've come to expect from products made in India. I ended up going back to the store (good thing I didn't purchase online), because one of the thread holes for the spindles wasn't threaded properly. I checked the one I got in the exchange and it had the same problem. Fortunately, the second one had a problem on the other gate piece, so I was able to make a complete workable kit between the two.
The gate being made in India was interesting considering that the wall mounting kit was made in the US and the stair mounting kit was made in China. I've seen this before where companies have manufacturing facilities all over the globe and they just cannot manage a consistent quality between them. Kidco better fix this.
It's hard to recommend this product for purchase, because of the quality problems; however, I love the gate and to me it was worth the hassle -- I probably wouldn't have thought so if I had to ship the kits back and forth.
June 29, 2008 Best pet / baby gate out there We went through 4 plastic gates in our kitchen doorway before we broke down and bought this one. All those plastic ones are too heavy for the hardware that comes with them and the hinges end up breaking! This lightweight, attractive, and easy to install gate keeps the baby and the dogs out of the kitchen whie letting the cats IN for access to their food & litterbox (I have it installed 4 1/2 inches up from the floor. The baby figured out how to crawl under it when it was 6 inches up so we had to lower it.) It is fantastic and I am back to Amazon to buy another for the top of the stairs. Easy for guests (and sleep-deprived parents) to figure out how to use.
May 24, 2008 Award Winning Gate! I researched top-of-stair gates for months and the thing I realized was that every gate got mixed reviews at best. Just when I thought I had made a decision, I would come across a review that slammed the product for one reason or another. Because of all of the mixed reviews that I came across, I purchased a membership to Consumer Reports. This gate was ranked # 2 gate for top of stairs. From reviews I read on-line, the gate that they gave the top award to had problems with the knob breaking in the locked position. In the end, I decided to go with this gate and I am so glad that I did! We purchased 2, 1 for the top and 1 for the bottom of our stairs. They've been installed for about a month and we are extremely pleased. We have metal railings so my Dad, who is a wood-worker, made some wooden surrounds for the balisters. The gates are super easy to open & close, even when I'm carrying my 1 year old daughter. No one in town had this gate, so we bought it site unseen. It is so refreshing to find a product that lived up to our high expectations.
