Starring: Patty Duke, Piper Laurie, Eric Lloyd
When Buddy (Eric Lloyd, The Santa Clause 3) is abandoned by his parents at the age of seven, he is dumped in the south at the small-town home of some older unmarried cousins. Without friends of his own age, Buddy develops a close friendship with one of the older, simpler ladies, Sook (Patty Duke, The Patty Duke Show) and the two undertake many adventures together. At Christmas time, they bake 31 fruit-cakes which they give as Christmas presents, even mailing them to President Roosevelt and Jean Harlowe! Although Buddy is eventually urged to move on with his life by his incessant cousin Jennie (Piper Laurie, Carrie), the memories of his friendship with Sook lives with him forever. Based on the original novel by Truman Capote, A Christmas Memory is a heartwarming story of love and friendship - and it is now available for the first time on DVD just in time for this holiday season.
User Submitted A Christmas Memory Reviews December 2, 2008 Something is greatly missing! Based on one of the all-time classic pieces of modern christmas literature, this TV movie version of the heartwarming Truman Capote tale of a young boy and his child-like older relative is devoid of any heart or warmth that was associated with the original story. Overacted, overwritten and overdone, it seems such a shame that hollywood could not have let this simple timeless tale be a sweet 30 minute special rather then dragging it out to 90 minutes of convoluted rubbish. Back in 1966 ABC did just that with a 30 minute version of "A Christmas Memory" starring Geraldine Page in a touching and poignant performance. As for me, I was able to locate a hard to find a copy of the 1966 version and with it's help have been able to erase this forgettable version of "A Christmas Memory" from my memory.
October 16, 2008 A Christmas Memory w/Patty Duke Years ago I had watched Truman Capote's wonderful story on TV. It was incredible and made a lasting impression on me. Not quite remembering which version I had seen and who had acted in it, I ordered this one with Patty Duke. What a disappointment. It didn't capture any of the spiritual magic of the one that I now know is the one that Geraldine Page acted in. Even though I read that it is only available in poor black and white quality, I will now order that one. I could never imagine that two acting versions could be so completely different. One completely lackluster and one BRILLIANT!
September 24, 2008 A Christmas Memory I absolutely love this movie. It's a warm and fuzzy movie. I have searched 2 years to find the DVD format. I have the book, but the movie is much, much better. Patty Duke and Eric Lloyd are perfect for their parts. It was tear jerker for me. I'm waiting for a sequel to this movie.??? I would recommend this movie. It's very heartwarming story between 2 best friends Sook and Buddy. I adore them both.
July 4, 2008 Love this movie I love this movie and of course Patty Duke done a great acting job.I'm a Christmas movie fanatic!!!!
March 29, 2008 Truman Capote's best! Whether it's Geraldine Page or Patty Duke playing in this fantastic film, it's always a pleasure to pop each movie into the player, come 'fruitcake weather' each year. The 'fruit jar' drinking glasses bring back pleasant memories of growing up in the South in the '30s and '40s...this is a delightful film for the family.
February 25, 2008 Hollywood arrogance Once again Hollywood has decided that a genius author is not good enough for their film efforts. Although the color is welcome, the acting superb, and the little Truman adorable, the screenwriters have added several unwarrented scenes and twists to the original plot. I guess if they feel they are better than Shakespeare, who is Truman Capote to be spared? The original is much superior even if it is in black and white.
January 8, 2008 A Christmas Memory I would highly recommend this movie. It is a remake of the Truman Capote film shown on television for many years. The quality is excellent.
January 8, 2008 An enjoyable holiday movie. This version of "A Christmas Memory" takes a few liberties with the Capote text and is definitely a second to the original version starring Geraldine Page. However, the performances of the various principals in this version, especially of Eric Lloyd, are endearing and are thoroughly convincingA Christmas Memory.
December 16, 2007 Could be better I liked this movie but, it was kind of slow going in the story line and I really hated the ending. It left you feeling like you needed to more of what happened to the boy. The movie wasn't terrible but, just wasn't the best either.
December 12, 2007 Patty Duke is a Legend! This remake is spot on! Love the performance of Patty Duke and Piper Laurie.
5 stars!
