Buried like a bone in a snowdrift, Balto never achieved the theatrical success it should have, but it's worth digging up. The film is structured on the true tale of a lead sled dog, Balto, that brought a diphtheria antitoxin to the small town of Nome, Alaska. The film balances comedy, villany, and drama very well and the voice work is above average. Safe family viewing, as even the villain's comeuppance manages a civilized resolution. The only problem is that the film never explains why these events in Alaska inspired New Yorkers to build a statue to the dog in Central Park. Maybe Balto eventually got mugged there. --Keith Simanton
User Submitted Balto Reviews August 4, 2008 An epic cartoon! Balto is one of the most emotive, epic and interesting cartoons movies I have ever seen in years.
Based on a true story happened in 1925, the film deals with the raffles a half dog and half wolf creature named Balto will have to face to reach its goal. To bring from one miles away medicines for the diphtheria, that almost makes some children of that village pass away.
Funny sequences ornament this well told story. There will an implacable enemy Steele, a beauty dog, fierce animals, hair raising sequences and of course, the snowy and windy weather.
A movie for kids and adults too. Lovable, entertained and recommended. Don't let it pass in front of you.
July 2, 2008 classic movie This is a good cartoon for the family, especially a family that lives in Alaska (which is pretty much the only place this movie was ever a big hit). Some parts are a little too silly, and obviously everything is not very historically accurate, but it has an enjoyable plot and it makes me miss my home state of Alaska, which is why I got the movie in the first place.
I see there are some quality complaints about this DVD. Ummm...this DVD version is the same exact quality that the VHS version was, they just transferred it onto DVD. What do you expect from a movie that came out in the '90's? No the movie is not as visually pleasing as the cartoons that come out today, but obviously, the original version did not come out any time recently. And no, there are not many special features, but why would there be? WHEN THIS MOVIE CAME OUT, IT ONLY CAME OUT ON VHS. THERE ARE NO SPECIAL FEATURES ON A VHS TAPE! Despite some stupid complaints from other people, I found it very easy to get over the small shortcomings of this DVD version of a classic movie that I watched when I was in middle school living in Alaska...it takes me back in time a few years, which is nice because that is what I need when I am a soldier stuck in Iraq. I am glad I bought this movie, and I suggest it to anyone who has been to or wants to go to Alaska.
June 19, 2008 yeah love it this is a great movie for kids. i forgot how much i loved it and still love it
June 4, 2008 Great movie!!! my kids love it!!! My kids love this movie, they can watch it a thousand times and never get tired. Highly recommended.
March 31, 2008 Inspiring I first watched this when it came out when my kids were young and decided to get it for myself. This is a great story with some historical significance. Teaches kids who watch the movie about courage, overcomming the odds, handling bullies and gives a little history. Great addition to the library.
February 8, 2008 It's Nome, Alaska First of all, the name of the town was Nome, Alaska. Not Normal, Alaska. Okay? I'd know this, because I reside in Alaska.
Now, for my review. I used to watch the crap out of this movie when I was little. Then at about nine years old, it went on the movie shelf and never came back off. Then, this morning, at age thirteen, I popped it into the VCR and watched, expecting to hate it.
Boy, was I wrong. It wa slike being eight years old again. I found myself cheering Balto on with all of my might not caring about how cheesy or childish it was. I loved it. So, I went back and watched The Aristocats, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and I'm about to watch The Fox and the Hound. For one day, I got to remember why being a young child was so fantastic and innocent. But I'm not going to tell my friends about it. It's a bit embarrassing. And, I want to keep it to myself for a while.
January 25, 2008 Great Movie for Education and Family I had this movie several years ago when it first came out on VHS. In the process of moving I lost but am now glad to have it again, this time in DVD. My wife and daughter love this movie!
December 28, 2007 Excellent Family Movie!! My 11 year old daughter requested this on DVD when our video deck went out and I was quite surprised because it was not a "new" movie. My daughter went on to relate that this was a true story and it touched her deeply - all very positive when you have so much negative in the media today. She went on to say that there is actually a Balto statue in New York City that we could visit. There is a strong message in this movie - and a positive one at that that leaves a lasting impression! Buy with confidence - you and your kids won't be sorry!
July 7, 2007 Balto Excellent - I ordered two copies for my grandchildren and it was a hit with them, particularly after I explained to them that it was based on a true story. My 5-year old twin grandchildren (a boy and a girl) must have watched it a dozen times or more. The story idea of having the grandmother take her granddaughter to see the monument was brilliant. My 5-year old granddaughter stunned me by immediately realizing that the grandmother was supposed to be the sick little girl who was saved when the dog team arrived just in time bringing the antitoxin to Nome. The storyline is perfectly gauged to hold the attention of young children and has great educational value - something I can't say about any of the garbage shown on TV these days that is aimed at children.
June 12, 2007 Balto After having moved up to Alaska for the summer, I had a huge craving to see an old, lovable movie. And that was Balto. And i wasn't disappointed :D I love this movie.
