Charlie Brown gets rocks in his trick-or-treat bag, Linus awaits a visitation from the Great Pumpkin in his terribly sincere pumpkin patch (while the adoring little Sally sits tight with him), Snoopy falls asleep, Lucy harasses Schroeder, and Pig-Pen kicks up a dust storm even beneath his costume in this classic television broadcast. Funny stuff, but also graced with Charles Schultz's more poignant and gently satiric themes from the 1960s on the influence of faith, failure, and hope in our lives. --Tom Keogh
User Submitted It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown Reviews November 2, 2008 Holiday Classic It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown is, for me, one of those great holiday cartoons that I don't want to miss when it's shown on ABC. With the busy schedule that we all have, it's impossible to plan my life around the TV schedule (as I don't have Tivo) so it's good to have these kind of classics in my collection.
Everything from the music of Vince Guaraldi to the happiness in Snoopy's laugh this is a great film be you 7 or 70.
November 1, 2008 CLASSIC PEANUTS AT THEIR BEST! HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Watching these Peanunts holiday specials was a yearly tradition in my house as a kid, but over the years with our busy lives we had grown not to watched them. I watched Zombie's Halloween the theatrical version of his remake of the classic and this was just what the doctor ordered for an after dinner mint! I have the original release and the DVD transfer looks fine, not much in the way of extras, but another Peanuts special 'You're not elected Charlie Brown'. I know that they have released these specials on "new improved" 2 disc set, but I'm a little tired of all this upgrading!..and I find it hard to believe they could fill another disc with extras! It's become a bit ridiculous, so I'll be sticking with the older edition and I'll be enjoying it every year!
Incidentally, The theatrical version of Zombie's Halloween is way better than the Unrated version! 3 1/2 stars! I couldn't review it because I did a review on the Unrated version some time ago and Amazon groups them all together!
Happy Halloween!
October 28, 2008 It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown It was great on television avery year, it was great on VHS, and it's great on DVD. This belongs in every movie collector's collection.
October 17, 2008 Deeper Than We Might Think This is an interesting Halloween special in that we may have to watch it a few times before we understand it. The movie starts with Linus and Lucy getting their pumpkin for Halloween. When Lucy starts to cut it up (obviously for the sake of making a Jackolantern), Linus gets upset. At the risk of sounding like a nature fanatic, Linus has his logic. As people, we cause great harm to the world around us for the sake of some brief pleasures. (If you are reading this Linus, don't think you didn't have a part in me just buying plug in light up plastic Jackolanterns.) Moving on, Linus writes a letter to his hero, the Great Pumpkin. Many people rebuke him for having this fantasy. But the reality is that Santa Clause is a fantasy as well, but it is an accepted fantasy. In short, Linus is being ridiculed and scorned because his fantasy is not the common one. Moving on, Linus chooses to spend Halloween waiting in the Pumpkin Patch for his hero. The other half of the story revolves us understanding that Charlie Brown DOES play by the rules. He gets dressed up, goes trick or treating, and then goes to the Halloween Party. BUT, he does NOT really have a good time. He only got a bag full of rocks, and Lucy and others are less than kind to Charlie. While this certainly has its sad elements, Linus does have one triumphant moment. He continues to believe in what's important to him even though it makes him the object of scorn. In a way, the message behind this is probably to be true to ourselves. It also reminds us that happiness won't always come from following the norm.
October 15, 2008 Childhood Memories This was one of my favorites! It brings back memories of when I was a child and my mom was still alive, baking my favorite yellow cake(boxed... with much love) and chocolate frosting (processed...by her two hands...and of course, much love) with a tall glass of milk (whole, of course...ah, the good ole days)! We could only afford this treat once or twice a year, so when Thanksgiving arrived, I knew that I was in for a special treat...Charlie Brown and yellow cake with chocolate frosting and milk.yummmmmm! I didn't care much for the meal, only the dessert. I miss those days and this show certainly brings back fond memories of mom and that era.
October 15, 2008 "All I Got Was A Rock..." This movie was one of TV specials I could not wait to see every year. It was like a religious moment. Halloween was my favorite time of year right after Xmas and then when I became a teenager, Xmas didn't mean much to me anymore and Halloween moved right up into number one. Loved it.
Charlie Brown's "All I got was a rock" is classic line and I always felt so bad for the little round headed guy especially when the girls called him over and used the back of his head as a draft to draw what the pumpkin should look like when carved. LoL That and Snoopy's WW1 Flying Ace behind enemy lines.
One of the other best lines is Sally Brown's when she tells Linus out in the Pumpkin Patch, "If you try to kiss me, I'll slug you!" A lil five year old girl telling that to a six year old boy is hysterical.
The part I never understood came from Linus being Lucy's younger brother yet Lucy and Charlie Brown were in the same class with Linus? How? Obviously it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of Peanuts universe but the notion that these characters are there and will be for generations to come, are great.
GET THIS MOVIE!
October 10, 2008 Good for the whole family My husband and I remember watching this movie as children so of course we wanted to have it for our 8 month old son since it's his first Halloween. We love watching this as a family. They don't make cartoons like this anymore.
October 8, 2008 "It's the great (MOVIE), Charlie Brown" Esta es una gran pelicula de Charlie Brown, la vi de chico y hoy dia con 40 años a cuesta, la he vuelto a ver... y sigo quedando maravillado. Gracias por hacernos recordar aquellos años... Viene con subtitulos y audio en español. @rmando. México.
October 3, 2008 Come on now, What would Halloween be without Charlie.......... Although hundreds of Halloween TV specials bombard us each October with cartoons and shows but this is my personal all-time favorite. Charles Shultz was a visionary artist. He transcends time and race barriers to create these wonderful characters anyone can identify with. This one has it all! Wonderful hand drawn animation with warm watercolor backgrounds that capture the essence of Autumn so vividly along with the terrific scoring by jazz musician Vince Guarldi.
For those of you that already know, I like for you to reminisce with me here but if you don't know you get poor Charlie Brown and his misfortune to always get a rock instead of candy on Halloween night! Linus and his misguided Great Pumpkin worship. Lucy and her mean streak! Sally and her unrequited love. Snoopy and his alter-ego the Red Baron! SO many good memories are made by watching these specials. It's not only the characters of Charlie Brown, Linus and Lucy that keep you in hysterics, but Sally .. she steals the show. She's not only cute and lovable, but can whip out sarcasm with the best of em. I think she can even give Lucy a run for her money!
Now before I continue, is it me or is that moon mighty huge on the pumpkin patch field. I was always at awe every time that scene came up. If you have kids (or are kids at heart) this is a no-brainer. Start (or continue) your Holiday tradition right with "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" today!
Oh, Great Pumpkin--where are you?
Question for those who are enjoying the horror fest this month I need to know "Who is your favorite character and why?" You get a extra treat if your able to answer it. Happy Halloween!
September 27, 2008 The Great Pumpkin has arrived! Thank you Warner Brothers for releasing a remastered version of this holiday classic. You all know the story so here are just a few comments about this new version. The picture is fantastic. The image is a little sharper and the colors really stand out when compared to the previous release. The look is no longer muddied. Also, right after the scene where Charlie Brown receives an invitation to the Halloween party, Linus carries a sign into the pumpkin patch and the scene fades to black for the commercial break. On the previous release, the scene fades and the music cuts out. I always believed that is how it always was. On this new release, the scene fades to black but the music cue continues with a black screen until it finishes. There must have been some kind of bumper here for the original broadcast. At least the music cue has been restored. Unfortunately, the final scene behind the credits is a little off but that doesn't take away from the rest of the show. Now for a quick comment on the "making of" extra. If you own the book, then this featurette adds nothing! But it is still nice to hear the story from the people that were involved. Too bad they didn't interview the child actors. This is a definite improvement over Paramount's previous release. Enjoy!
