Make no bones about it -- Disney's SNOW DOGS is a hilarious action-packed comedy your whole family will love. Eight adorable but mischievous dogs get the best of dog hater Ted Brooks (Cuba Gooding Jr.) when he leaves his successful Miami Beach dental practice for the wilds of Alaska to claim his inheritance -- seven Siberian huskies and a border collie -- and discover his roots. As Ted's life goes to the dogs, he rises to the occasion and vows to learn to mush with his inheritance. Totally out of his element, he faces challenges he's never dreamed of. There's a blizzard, thin ice, an intimidating crusty old mountain man named Thunder Jack (James Coburn), the Arctic Challenge Sled Dog Race that's only two weeks away, and a life-and-death rescue. This fish-out-of water, tail-wagging comedy is nothing but doggone good fun and a celebration of family -- both human and canine!
User Submitted Snow Dogs Reviews June 19, 2008 Great movie about dogs! Snow dogs is about a man who gets to live where his mom used to live in Alaska. There he meets dogs who were Lucy's (his mom) snow dogs when she participated in the dog sled race. It's a very good storyline. I especially enjoyed watching this movie. If you like watching dog movies like Air Bud, I totally recommend this to you!
May 10, 2008 It's time to get ready for Mush Hour!, I discovered this extremely funny movie in the local video rental store when it was only available on video cassette. Then, after renting it 3 times, I almost rented it a 4th time, but, after I told the check-out gal that this was my 4th time renting it, she asked me, "Well, do you want to buy it?" and I said "Sure!" Then, when it came out on DVD, I bought a previously-viewed copy of it from the same video rental store. I love Snow Dogs for lots of reasons: the cast, which includes Cuba Gooding, Jr., the late James Coburn, Joanna Bacalso, Nichelle Nichols, Brian Doyle-Murray (brother of Bill Murray), etc., the plot, in which dentist Ted Brooks (Gooding, Jr.), who hates dogs, finds out that he's adopted, he travels from his home, in Miami, Florida, to Tolketna, Alaska for the reading of the last will & testament of his birth mother, a sled-dog racer, who's just passed away and left him her team of sled dogs, plus her border collie, Nana. But, Ted faces challenges like a crusty, old mountain man named Thunder Jack (Coburn)who wants the sled dogs for the Arctic Challenge sled-dog race, which is similar to the Iditarod. So, Ted trains himself to be a musher. I also like the names of the sled dogs like Yodel, Sniff, Demon, etc., the dialogue especially when Barb (Bacalso) & Ted are on a mountain & she tells him, "Maybe you need to finish what you started.", because that's a phrase that I live by, and the funny parts, like when Ted's teaching himself how to ride a dog-sled. This movie is hilarious, and I recommend it to anyone who likes Cuba Gooding, Jr., comedy movies, or any kind of movies, in general, because, believe me, this movie is GREAT!
May 10, 2008 what a service and the quality was awesome... I am proud to own this movie--I still enjoy it everytime....I had friends living in Alaska....
April 16, 2008 Cute Family Fun The lighter side of Cuba Gooding Jr. is played to perfection in this little family gem. Nowhere near a great movie, but extremely entertaining, especially if you have little ones around. A successful African-American dentist(Gooding), finds out he was adopted, and leaves Miami to collect an inheritance after the death of his birth mother in small town Alaska; a shack and a pack of sled dogs. He also meets and falls in love with Barb, played by the stunningly beautiful Joanna Bacalso who show's him the ropes of sledding. That's when much of the laughter begins.
Fine supporting cast, including a very grumpy James Coburn in one of his last screen performances, and Nichelle Nichols of TV's Star Trek, playing Cuba's adopted mom; still gorgeous beyond her years. And no, the dogs don't talk throughout the film, only during one dream sequence. A fact that disappointed many viewers. A real family film to get everyone together over.
March 21, 2008 funny movie cuba gooding at his best, He just cracks me up in the whole movie, Love the animals also, If you want something to laugh at and ya like dogs too this is a must see cute, funny movie I can watch again and again!!
February 5, 2008 inter-racial humor with dogs and dentists I enjoyed much of the humor in the story: the city-slicker out of his element in Alaska, and the dog-hater whose mother leaves him her sled-dog team. But I found it irritating that there was inter-racial humor which would not be accepted if a white person presented it the other way around - a dentist raised by white people who finds out he has a black ancestor, or who is raised in a white community and goes back to his - possibly - New Orleans Haitian roots, to inherit (what?) maybe a place as an ethnic clothing designer, and some rhode island red, voodoo-blessed roosters.
What reviewers skip is that Ted is the illigitimate son of a black mother and a white father, which is Thunder Jack. So she gave him up for adoption. This tension is played off and there is a gradual father-son reunion, as Thunder rescues Ted one time, and Ted returns the favor when Thunder goes missing in the big race. Naturally, there is a bad snow storm. Naturally no one else has a desire to brave it to find the musher. Naturally, foster-mom arrives to bid a tearful, worried farewell to her son who goes off to get Thunder.
The dogs are good characters in their own right, and the animatronics worked seamlessly, making "Demon" really seem like he was plotting against Ted with human intellect.
The movie was going well until the cliff-falling-off scene. That was so contrived it spoiled the credibility of the story. I snapped out of the movie and could not get reabsorbed again. The dogs could never have hauled 2 grown men up a cliff with the sled and gear. Deos Ex Machina (act of God) was a bad choice by the script writer.
It had a nice family reunion at the finish, and Ted gets his girl, the lovely eskimo-Indian girl, who runs the local pub. All in all, a nice story. There was no obvious sexual content, and no gore, no cussing, and no nudity - hooray!!
September 18, 2007 Great movie! I first saw Cuba Gooding Jr. in 'Men of Honor' and thought him to be a great actor...very feeling and empathatic. He only proves to be a very versatile and talented actor in this movie, quite different than 'End Game' and movie previously mentioned. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to anyone wanting to be entertained versus educated....not a bad thing. I have watched it over and over at least a half-dozen times and I still enjoy it. Oh, did I mention I watch it with my Siberian Husky...Shiloh? Very good movie, great transaction and timely delivery.
September 2, 2007 Funny but inaccurate We don't have skunks here in Alaska. Cuba is a natural comedian. Silly movie. Great for kids.
June 30, 2007 This film hits all it's marks. Almost as interesting and entertaining as the film was reading the reviews. There are a lot of people making social judgements about the characters and I think they miss the whole point of the film. Disney set out to make a funny movie about a Miami dentist. It could have been a plumber from Omaha but a dentist is good too. They added enough detail to give the characters a little depth. Reviewers complain about the depth. Funny. The movie is about a man that is transported to an enviroment completly different for the comfort that he enjoyed in Miami. He learns and copes well and the funny parts mix well with the more dramatic parts. Disney has another winner. I agree with some reviewers that adults will probably enjoy it more than young kids.
May 13, 2007 Fun Movie This movie was purchased so my grandkids would have a good movie to watch when they come to my house. Turns out that it is such a good movie and funny movie that I enjoy it as much or more than they do.
