I need some help here - about back pain

Bee_Kay wrote: Ever since I can remember.... well, as an adult, I've had weird things going on with my lower back.

It's like there is a pinched nerve or something. It's on my lower back but over to the right of my spine.... like on the very back of my hip.

It's been like this for 3 days now. Most of the time I am ok... but then, I'll move a certain way and it's like there is this pain that makes my back spasm or something.

Then there are other times where it gets so bad that I will be lying in bed and I literally can't move.... I can't move side to side or even get out of bed without my DH's help. It's weird.

My friend said she has the same thing.... but its after she gave birth 3 months ago. She said that it was a syatic (SP?) nerve. I don't know how to spell it as I've never even heard about it.

Anyone know about this?

Bee_Kay replied: OK. I found it..... its called a Sciatic Nerve.

I have to add something that has me kinda freaked out.
when I was little, my family would go to my uncles house for visits. They had a river out back. So, they had this rope tied to a tree branch and we would stand up on the bank and swing out over the river and let go and fall into the river.

Well, I was going to do it this one time..... attempt to is more like it. I swung out and got scared and swung back.... and my lower back hit the side of an aluminum boat.

After crying endlessly, my parents didn't bring me to the doctor because they couldn't afford medical insurance rolleyes.gif (which pi**es me off because they drank like fish and smoked like chimneys)....

Anyways, do you think that could have something to do with it?

gr33n3y3z replied: maybe
I take 3 advils at a time when my back bothers me like that but only when its bad but I take advil like candy any way bc of the back and ankle on a daily basis.
I have a missing vertebret and the 2 disk sit on each other and I also have 4 disk spurs on the lower back.
They wanted to give me spinal shots for the pain but told them no way
my sciatic nerve is always bothering me

I hope your feeling better

Bee_Kay replied: Wow Lisa! You do have some back problems. Does your doctor say if it will let worse over the years? that is scary stuff. hug.gif

I've taken Tylenol but it doesnt really do anything. Does Advil work better?

redchief replied: I like Advil better for back pain, but I can't say it will work better for you. Some like Aleve better. I would try different OTC pain meds until you see which works best for that particular pain though. Hope you're feeling better soon!

JP&KJMOM replied:
I agree with Ed. Try them and see what works for you. My dad likes Aleve for his back. Says it last longer but mom likes Advil. Me~I am just a Tylenol person. Hope it gets better soon.

gr33n3y3z replied:
yes it will get worse it has already I had this problem in my teens and 3 back braces along the way
they say I'm to young to get the problems taken care of just to many problems and very risky surgry so I just deal with it and go much slower and not lift anything to heavy bc it throws it out but then I'm known for just bending over and picking shoes up and it goes out.
I became very good at blocking out the pain I guess bc I have lived with it most of my life.
Advil works good for me I just have to take more of them when its that bad
I hate perscription pain killers I had those before and I always go back to advil.
But the other stuff that the others mentioned may work better for you.
Heat and ice works good also

redchief replied:
...and I've developed into quite the back massager. wink.gif

Bee_Kay replied: LOL! Ed and Lisa... you two are so darn funny sometimes!!

You know Lisa.... I think (common sense tells me) that it would be better to try and get it taken care of while you are still young.... before it gets WAY worse. But, who knows... Im not a doctor.

I'll try something different than Tylenol... probably Advil. I hope it works. I know that its not too serious... just a pain in the butt (literally emlaugh.gif ) when trying to do regular day to day things.

siblingtoolivia replied: Coming from someone who is a pro at back pain - had back surgery at 21 years old to remove a disc and have had problems off and on ever since....first take advil or motrin or aleve, you need to reduce the swelling in the area, those are anti inflamatories, tylenol will dull the pain but not help the swelling which is the problem. Your sciatic nerve runs from your lower back across your hips and down both legs...you can feel pain from it anywhere from your butt to your feet and anywhere inbetween. Second, get a good chiropractor. The pain is the swelling somewhere along the channel of that nerve that puts pressure on the nerve, sometimes you sit wrong, sleep wrong, carry something too heavy or pick something up wrong that is enough to twinge things in there and then the swelling presses on the nerve causing the pain. Often a chiropractor can readjust your spine to put things back in order and take the pressure off the nerve, then usually within a few days the swelling subsides and presto you are out of pain....if that doesn't work, you may want to have an MRI done to be sure you don't have a herniated disc which is causing the pressure on the nerve....

Caution though, make sure the Chiropractor you go to is good and that he takes xrays and does a full exam BEFORE he ever makes any adjustments. They can do more damage than good if they don't proceed carefully!

Good luck!!!

Bee_Kay replied:
Thanks Christine! You DO know alot about it! My husband said the same thing.. he goes to a wonderful chiropracter.

They (chiropracters) kinda freak me out though LOL!!!

I went with my sister to one of her chiropractic visits..... OMG! the way her body cracked freaked me out!! He cracked her neck, back, hips, and her friggin feet and toes!!! blink.gif <-- that's probably how I really looked when she was getting adjusted (I was right in the room with them) emlaugh.gif

I'll probably go in for a visit though.... I'm just apprehensive blush.gif

gr33n3y3z replied:
the thing is no Dr wants to touch it
I guess when my own 2 feet cant move on their own then it will be no huge loss if things dont go right with surgery
I see what they mean and the risk at this age isnt worth it at any cost for less pain

Oh but I thought about it for 2 sec. not to have pain lol

siblingtoolivia replied: Chiros can be your best friend, like I said just insist that they do a full exams, xrays, etc. to make sure what is wrong can be treated.....if its a herniated disc problem there is little they can do and often can do more harm than good!

Believe me, it isn't the best subject to be so verse about!!

On the good side though the best my back ever is is when I am pregnant, according to my surgeon, when pregnant, all those muscles, tendons, etc. down there loosen up to ready for birth therefore your back is more flexible, etc. etc.!!

Halo42101 replied: I am sorry this is a little late but I hope you feel better soon and that you get some kind of relief. It sounds very painful whatever you have. I will be praying for you. hug.gif
