User Submitted Graco Sweetpeace Newborn Soothing Center Reviews October 9, 2008 make sure you buy it from a store/dealer If you are considering this purchase, make sure you buy it from a physical store or online dealer that will accept returns. I say this because the first unit I bought was defective in that the arm was able to swing, but NOT with the cradle on the arm (and certainly not with my son in it), so it was essentially useless. Luckily, I purchased it from a store and exchanged it for another unit, which has functioned perfectly.
What I like: *assembly is easy, and takes only about 20 minutes *rocking motion is very smooth, and my son loves it -- even if he's not necessarily sleepy, he will sit in it for extended periods of time and be perfectly content, which is otherwise unlikely to happen even if one were to hold him in one's arms *ambient white noise tracks are nice, especially the river/running-water one, which puts my guy to sleep really well -- the other ambient tracks are in-utero heartbeats, rainy storm, and trickling stream *the unit plugs in to the wall, and is able to run indefinitely or you can set the unit to turn off after 30 minutes *doesn't take up much space, occupying about 3 ft x 3 ft *padding is very soft, and the head-rest is nice to prevent your baby from rolling off to the side *cradle is detachable and is able to rotate into different positions without moving the base
What I don't like: *motor is annoying if white noise or music is not playing -- it kind of sounds like a man-goat groaning *music is kind of lame and tinny *speaker pops when you turn it off and it startles my son, so I cover it with my hand to dampen the noise *expensive relative to other swings *would have been nice if the first unit I purchased was functional
October 7, 2008 Couldn't do without this swing! Ouch, it hurt spending so much money on a swing.. not knowing if my baby would actually like it. At first, he didn't. I thought for sure that this was going to be filed under "waiting for ebay". Then I started using the swing with our Graco carseat, and my life as a stay at home mom changed dramatically.
For some reason, though its adorable and cushy, my baby doesn't like the seat provided with the swing. We now use the seat elsewhere in the house, but he still doesn't like to sit in it for long.
Before I started using the carseat in the swing, the baby only slept on my chest for naps. He wouldn't sleep anywhere else. Then once I started sticking the carseat on the swing base, low and behold, he sleeps! It makes sense.. he is used to his carseat carrier... this just keeps him in motion in a seat that he already loves. I take him from the car, or stroller, and put him right in the base, and it keeps him napping nicely.
This swing comes with a lot of bells and whistles that I don't use, however, the electric adapter is something I couldn't do without.
Should you buy this particular swing? If you can find a swing that is electric, and fits your carseat carrier, and is cheaper, I would say go for that. The electric cord, and carseat adaptability is worth the price.
October 4, 2008 Amazing This product is absolutely amazing. I've never seen a better product for babies and I wish I had had this for my first baby. The technology used in this product is amazing. The swing is actually designed to mimic the rhythem (spelling?) of a person walking. The seat is set up like a cocoon around the newborn. The best part, in my opinion, is the sounds. You have several options. You can download your own songs to an ipod and plug it in, there are classical tunes preprogrammed into the machine, and there are a series of differant white noises to choose from such as rain, womb sounds, ocean, ect. My husband and I loved the white noises so much we'll probably end up using it even after the baby is done with it.
October 1, 2008 Great Swing I think the best advantage of this swing is that it plugs in! We looked all over for a swing that plugs in. We also like the vibrating feature for the chair, it really relaxes our baby. The canopy is good to dim the lights so baby can sleep better. We really like how you can put your Graco car seat in the swing so when you get home you can put baby from car seat without taking him out so he will continue sleeping. The Ipod feature is nice to play our own music.
Great swing!
September 28, 2008 Beautiful, but didn't work for our baby This is a beautiful piece of equipment. Of all the items I received at my baby shower, this was the one I was most excited about. It's very well designed and I love all the features - especially how cuddly the seat is and the fact that we could also hook in our car seat. The only problem for us was that our son really didn't like it at all. He would occasionally sit in it for 5 minutes or so, but most of the time he would start wailing the minute I got him anywhere near it. At his daycare, they have a Fisher Price Papasan swing and he LOVES it. We ended up buying one of those and sadly, the Sweet Peace is sitting in our basement in hopes that any future babies may enjoy it. The Sweet Peace is really nice, but if you can, try it out before you invest $$ since it doesn't work for every baby.
September 19, 2008 Baby still sleeps in it! Its all great! The car seat clicks right in. The noises are great and I love using it as a speaker for my ipod. He sleeps so well in it and he also enjoys playing with the mirror and rattle bar toy. The only thing I have problems with is at speed 6 it bumps a little on each end and kinda jars him. Its not a lot bu it does do a small little bump on each end but only at the highest speed. He doesnt mind now I think hes gotten used to the bump. Hes almost 8 months now and we had to sell his fisher price swing when he was 6 months cause he was just too big for it. He still has room to grow in this one!
September 16, 2008 IF YOUR SWING CROAKS GET A NEW MOTOR! I read many reviews on every site I could find before ordering this swing and overall I am happy with it. My son is 7 weeks old and we have been using it since the day we brought him home. First of all it is very easy to assemble even when you are 9 months pregnant. Colors are neutral and go well with almost everything. The soft plush cover sits directly on the hard plastic seat so I felt it was lacking padding. I am paranoid about my child having a flat head so I added some foam from a craft store. I love that it plugs into an outlet so no need for batteries. I did notice that when I first tried my swing before my son was born that it stalled when set on 2 and the motor croaked and seemed loud for what I expected. I had read about this online and called Graco. The woman I spoke to was very nice and ordered a new motor for me free of charge. She informed me that the next shipment they had would be in 6 weeks. It took about 2 months to get the new motor and it is whisper quiet compared to the original motor. We used the swing with the original croaking motor until the new one arrived and it worked fine on any setting higher than 2. My son loves the swing and it takes up less space than the old swing we had. I also like that we can put our carseat on the swing base and when not using our carseat it fits under the swing perfectly. I gave it 4 stars for lack of padding and the fact that we had to get a new motor.
September 12, 2008 Good, but overpriced and needs improvements 3 months in now and I have some observations. The reviews here are reasonably accurate. It is a bit overpriced. But it is well made.
Yes, the motor makes some noise. But it's a rhythmic noise and doesn't bother us or, more importantly, the baby. It's a 'get used to it' sort of thing. The mechanism seems smartly designed as it allows the seat to get stopped while the motor is still running. That is, you want to move the baby around but forgot to turn it off. It doesn't get bound up or break when you stop it swing.
So far I can't imagine using any of the faster speeds. Geez, it's practically be an amusement park ride at anything faster than the 2 speed. Unless you're training a tiny astronaut (or WANT the kid to upchuck) I can't see using the faster settings.
The lap bar is boring, there's "not enough" for the kid to do with it to bother with it. The bar does work and contrary to another reviewer, I have found it stays up when only one side is released. It's easy to remove it entirely.
The hood is a nice feature, we use it. But the single dangling toy is lame. For this much money it ought to be better.
The swaddle blanket thingy is likewise lame, skip it entirely. So are the seat belt straps. I'm sure some lawyer said they have to be there but they're useless and end up being uncomfortable underneath the baby.
It would be nice for a newborn if it could recline a bit further. We had to rig up a towel or two to get our baby positioned properly. Otherwise he tended to curl over. The padded head rest wasn't effective since the seat position was too upright (and this was on the lowest position).
The music selections are not soothing. Not at all. Our boy HATES all of them. Turn on any of them and he immediately reacts with displeasure. The only sound he'll put up with out of it is the Womb Sounds option. He likes other music from other devices (and a zune mp3 player we use with it). He just does not like the ones built-into the sweet peace.
The seat vibrate option is nice and our baby likes it. But the position of the switch for it could be better. It's right on the front edge of the seat. The position makes it too easy to accidentally turn it on when you walk by it. As in, you've got your hands full dealing with the baby, and you're trying to leave and accidentally hit the switch. You come home hours later only to find the seat has been running the whole time and now needs YET ANOTHER battery. It would help if they moved this switch to the side a bit.
My biggest complaint is the power connector. It's a cheap barrel connector placed TOO LOW to the floor. Low enough that when you try to move the unit the power connector gets broken. The socket snaps off and disappears inside the unit. Fortunately I'm handy and could crack it open (THAT was a pain in the butt). I chose to connect the power cord permanently inside the unit. Now at least the power connector won't snap off again. The current design stinks and needs improvement.
What do we like? Well, the seat is removable. This is a big plus. The seat itself has a curved base so it can double as a seat on the floor. We take the seat out, put it on the floor next to us in the morning and can rock it gently with our feet. Likewise we can put our Britax infant car carrier in the base. This is nice for when we've driven somewhere and want to let him sleep just a little longer.
So, would we buy it again knowing all this? Probably yes. I'd feel better if it was around the $100 mark and they improved the power connector and vibrate switch. But all in all it's been a decent purchase.
September 10, 2008 Extremely excited After reading all the reviews and worrying about the bad ones I just had to put my swing together and test it out. No baby yet, but we did put our 16 lb. dog in it and he seemed to like swinging!! I like everything about the swing so far. The "croaking" noise is there, but the first time we ran the swing while listening to any music or sound we didn't hear the croaking. I remembered to check it out and yes the noise was there, but it's a motor it has to make some noise. I use the fisher price ocean aquarium at work and that to has a motor sound, but it's that repetitive sound the baby likes. I found that the music can be turned down quite a bit as well as quite loud, but the volume can easily be turned down. If you are using an ipod or mp3 you have to adjust the volume on that not the swing. Someone mentioned the teether and it not being able to be refrigerated, but it is removable so you can put it in the fridge. There are diffent settings of music one for upbeat music like "flight of the bumblebees", one for calming music and one for womb-like sounds. I think this is a great swing and am excited to use it for the new baby.
September 4, 2008 Mother of 4 loves this swing With four children, this is our third baby swing. It was a gift: I would not have spent this much for myself, but I've gotta say, if you want to give a gift that is going to endear you tenderly to the recipient, this is it! I think they should make it for adults (and I'm not kidding!)
I love everything about it, but my favorites features are: 1. It plugs into the iPod! We play our favorite playlists while cooking dinner and the whole family enjoys the music. (be sure to disconnect the ipod when you're done, though, or it will drain the ipod battery.) 2. It is sturdy enough for my three year-old, and the toy bar is completely removable so she fits. It will soothe her during a tantrum: she kicks back, swinging and listening to her "tunes." She uses it as much as the baby. 3. It plugs into the wall so you don't have to worry about accidentally leaving the vibrating seat on and wearing out the batteries.
I love this swing! I seriously think they should have it in adult sizes for nursing homes, special needs adults, etc.
