User Submitted Kidco Starter Lock Set Reviews October 31, 2008 Not for drawer fronts This is an excellent product. Spendy but nice. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 was because it does not work on cabinet drawers only doors. My drawer fronts are attached to a piece of wood that is attached to the sides. I guess if your drawer fronts are attached directly to the drawer sides they may work for you. I used the adhesive and have had no problems. Excellent product!
August 3, 2008 These are great locks. These are great locks that are not at all visible. We actually installed the closer with the screw instead of the sticky tape--but we love the locks functioning and plan to use them everywhere they are needed. The installer should be handy.
July 22, 2008 Nails in cabinet door prevent lock from functioning - poor customer service from mfg. Won't work if magnet aligns with nails in cabinet door. Contacted manufacturer for replacement adhesive since we had to reposition/replace locks to get them to work and they told me to go buy some at a hardware store because they do not have any. Manufacturer's web page says they stand behind products and will replace them as "they are that confident." Very poor customer service since these are almost double the cost of other magnetic cabinet locks with screws.
June 28, 2008 The best locks we found We bought this pack along with the 4 lock pack. We tried several kinds of locks on the cabinet doors, and these are the only ones that actually worked for us. They are pretty easy to install, and I used the screws. I'm not sure that the adhesive would hold up to my son pulling on these for any extended time. Regardless, these work. Be forewarned, these things are huge! We only used them on the cabinet doors, not the drawers. They are fairly expensive and large to be used on some smaller drawers, or many drawers.
Like a reviewer below, I found that there are magnets in my cabinet doors. That was an interesting find to me, so make sure before you remove any adhesive tape that you check that. Those magnets will keep the latches from actually latching. Put it against the door first and move it around to make sure it doesn't drop down. I had that issue with one, so I ended up having to move it, and ruined the adhesive on one. That made installing that unit tough. Check first!
Once installed, these things are tough. They hang on tight, and the magnet is pretty strong. We don't even have to touch the cabinet on some of these. I would highly recommend these to anyone having problems with other locks.
April 20, 2008 Great but sometimes installation problems My child easily started defeating my other locks (that you push down to unlatch) at 16 months. He reaches his arm in there and undoes the lock... so I am switching to these. These are very nice except when installation doesn't go well. These must be installed almost exactly correct for them to work right. A little too high or too low and there could be problems. They are not easily adjustable and can be very frustrating if not installed exactly correct (won't latch right, won't close right, won't open right, etc.). The company should give more consideration to be able to make small adjustments when installing. That is my main "complaint" and thus I'm not rating it 5 stars. Also these are rather expensive but I suppose they are worth it considering that my other locks were more of a waste because they had to be replaced when they were defeated.
April 15, 2008 Kidco Starter Lock Set We purchased and put this item on our kitchen cabinet doors before my daughter was born. She's now 4 and we still have and use them for our cabinets. It's a great product that all parents and grandparents should own. You never have to think twice, did I lock the cabinet doors. Once they close they remain closed until you use the magnet to release & open the door.
November 27, 2007 The ones that work Finding them online was easier than at the hardware store. I like the fact that when my child is old enough to take them off, they won't leave holes in the cabinets. I just wish they weren't whitel
November 14, 2007 Great invention! Love this product but HIGHLY recommend you use hardware included after fastening with adhesive. Rating 4stars b/c we didn't think the adhesive would be strong enough to withstand our daughter's continual tugging on the cabinet doors - so we attchd with hardware & adhesive when initially installing. Give a tug yourself & see when installed with just the adhesive. Love that they stick into place making it easier to apply hardware. Don't recommend for drawers - too bulky. Consider for cabinet doors only.
September 10, 2007 Great locks! These locks are great. They do not have to be screwed into the cupboard and therefore do not do any damage. They are super strong so my little one cannot get the doors open. I love that they are mounted on the inside so that they are not an eyesore on the front of the door. They are the best hidden magnet locks on the market. The key is very easy to use and does not actually have to even touch the door to release the magnet so there is no damage done to the door when unlocking. I would definitely recommend these locks to anyone with little ones.
May 16, 2007 Very quick and easy to install - almost foolproof. These locks work great. To install them just peel off the tape on the part that goes on the cabinet and attach that part to the cabinet, temporarily attach the part that goes on the door to the part attached to the cabinet, peel off the tape from the door part, shut the cabinet door and the tape sticks to the door and voila, both pieces are attached where they need to be. Once attached, they work great, much better than the kind that let the child open the door a little bit and stick his hands inside. I use those on cabinets that I use a lot and that don't have anything dangerous in them. One thing that I found, is that these don't work well on drawers unless the optional screws are used. For some reason, when used on drawers the cabinet part of the latch doesn't stay in place well and so the drawer doesn't stay locked unless the latch is screwed in place . A tip when you install these, make sure that the magnet works on the cabinet you are installing them on. I ruined the adhesive on two of the locks, thinking I had a defective lock cause it stayed in the "unlocked" state, I removed one and replaced it with another before figuring out that that particular cabinet had something inside of it at the location I was trying to put the cabinet lock that made the cabinet lock stay in the "unlocked" state. The adhesive is EXTREMELY sticky, be sure that you are placing it where you want it, cause there is no repositioning or removing it without ruining it.
