User Submitted Philips Avent SCD 590 Digital Two-Parent Baby Monitor (with Zero-Interference DECT Technology) Reviews September 4, 2008 Fantastic for a big house/large property This monitor is absolutely fantastic. We live in a rambling house that's well over 4000 square feet, and have several acres of property as well. I believe the range of the monitor to be much more than the 900 feet claimed, as I have yet to go out of range while outdoors. The monitor does take some getting used to, and you DO have to read the directions before use (as you should with ANY product), but once you understand the machine it's simple as pie to use and does its job perfectly. Make sure to use rechargeable batteries ONLY, and charge the batteries and discharge them several times prior to use, as stated in the instructions. We have had zero issues with battery life because we followed the instructions.
For those people complaining about not being able to hear their kid, I suspect that they did not understand the way the sensitivity adjustment works--you change it on the handset itself by pressing Sensitivity and then using the volume + or - buttons to adjust it. We actually have to keep ours on 3 or 4 instead of all the way up, because it's so sensitive.
For the lady who complained that she didn't know her baby was awake because he didn't make enough noise: no monitor is going to alert you to a silent but awake kid! Count your blessings, LOL!
August 31, 2008 The BEST Monitor This is hands down the best baby monitor! We have 2 children under the age of 2 and I received a 900MHz monitor for my 1st at our baby shower. It was fine, at first, then all the static and background noise gave me a constant headache and made it difficult for me sleep. My husband found this monitor and we just LOVE IT. It's perfect - you only hear noice when your children make noise: NO back ground noise, no static, nothing. We love it so much, we bought a 2nd one for our new baby. I highly recommend it. And, of course, ordering through amazon was super easy and hassle free! A win-win.
August 30, 2008 Baby monitor We've tried LOTS of different monitors, and this is the first one that we can get a clear signal throughout our small rancher! I also like the "sleep" mode, so we don't have to hear our daughter's music all day long, it just comes on when she needs us, which is the whole point of the thing! Definitely worth the extra money you pay for it.
August 30, 2008 Good monitor, not very loud bought this on the recommendation of a friend, but somewhat disappointed. the selling point is that it's quiet. the downside is, you have to listen much more carefully than with other (less expensive) monitors. we put the monitor on a table the is directly ajacent to our bassinet. if you are working in the kithchen or the garage and have it on max volume and max sensitivity, you can't hear the baby until he starts to scream at the top of his lungs.
all in all it's a decent monitor and is much better looking than most monitors, but i think i'm going to use it for my older baby. we'll use our old monitor for the newborn so we can hear him better.
August 29, 2008 Excellent Baby Monitor I love this monitor; the base is small and unobtrusive. The nightlight feature is a nice added touch. We have 2 handheld parent units which is very convenient for a larger home. My husband keeps one in his office and there is one in the kitchen for me. We wear them when we go outside and you can hear everything. It picks up any sound our baby makes beautifully. I like the light feature as well so when you are taking a shower you can see that there is sound in the room. There is no interference and the sound is very crisp. We are both very pleased with this product.
August 22, 2008 baby monitor The product is great. I would recommend it to all new parents who would like to keep track of their baby while they sleep in their crib or bassenet. Also on amazon you get a great price and free shipping.
August 3, 2008 Static free stellar reception Being used in a very large home with metal studs. Reception and walkie-talkie features perform in a stellar manner without any static or loss of reception. Previously used unsecure 900mhz unit. Very happy with purchase.
July 31, 2008 Love the Product The product serves it purpose well! I have no interference with the product and I can hear my baby while I am in the other room.
July 28, 2008 Steph-New Mom I have the 2 parent unit of this product and only have one complaint- the batteries. I read a lot of reviews about this product and knew about the issues with battery life before I purchased it. I went through charging and fully dis-charging the batteries 4 times like the instructions said but the charge was less and less the further into the 4 charges. By the time everything was said and done the charge only lasted about a minute- literally. I went out an purchased some name brand re-chargable batteries and have not had a problem since. The parent units last longer than 8 hours depending on the sensitivity level. Love the product, just be ready to buy better batteries.
July 10, 2008 great monitor We have tried many different baby monitors and this is by far the best. We live on a farm and this has the longest range, and by far the longest battery life of any baby monitor digital or analog. We can be more than 100 yards from the house and still get perfect reception. I would highly recommend this to anyone. The written specs on this product as far as range are not as good as the graco digital monitor, but the difference is the Phillips literature is conservative and the Graco literature is bordering on false advertising as far as effective range. We also own the Graco 2.4 GHZ digital monitor and it has no where near the range of the Phillips monitor. If you're not taking the monitor outside the house and you live in a small house, the Graco is fine. But if you are planning on taking the monitor outside spend the extra money and get the Phillips, it's worth it.
