Simplicity Fisher-Price Portable Playard with Electronic Mobile, Bassinet and Changer in Rainforest
User Submitted Simplicity Fisher-Price Portable Playard with Electronic Mobile, Bassinet and Changer in Rainforest Reviews November 1, 2008 dangerous Simplicity Fisher-Price Portable Playard with Electronic Mobile, Bassinet and Changer in Rainforest
i have had this playpen for 2 months now. after taking the changing table off the sides collapse all the time. i use the bassinet part because my baby is only 3 months old and i am afraid she is going to fall out of it! at first i though maybe i had broken it but i called the company to see if their was a recall on them and they said no. but they have had many calls like mine and for me to cut out the 3 panels and send them to them for a refund. i think this is crap. i have a 3 month old i dont really have time to cut it apart and mail it and wait for my money back she'll prolly be a year old before that happens. i love the look of the playpen and she loves the mobil but i cant take the risk. when i take the bassinet out and use the big play pen part it will prolly collasp with her in it!!
October 20, 2008 Dangerous!!!!! Please Report I agree. It is dangerous. We don't use this item very much because the grandma's both have cribs, However; the last few rare times we used this item, a side collapsed while my daughter was in it. Since it is only used occasionally it's not like it's overused or abused. It only happened when my daughter began to stand and held onto the side. Even still the strength of an 18 pound baby should not be enough to collapse the side. No, she was not trying to climb over the side, she was just holding on, and yes, I put it together right (lifted the middle, made sure the sides snapped, pushed the middle back down, etc). It happened just today at the babysitter's when we put her down for a nap. I tried to call the manufacturer when I got home from work, but they were already closed- will try again tomorrow.
Got a hold of Simplicity today, they offered the standard refund, but had a totally hands off attitude as far as taking responsibility for the safety of the product. The girl that I spoke with acted like it wasn't the responsibility of the company to issue a recall, stated that they don't even know how to go about issuing a recall and that they had no intention of issuing a recall and directed me to the Consumer Products Safety Commission- which I immediately called after getting off the phone with her. The standard number to call took my information and I got the impression that my concern was going to end up in a pile on someone's desk. So, I called the office of the Commissioner (got the number off of their web site) who then directed me to the head of public relations. They seemed highly concerned about my complaint, and wanted as much information as I could provide. By the way, the original Simplicity is out of business, the company had been taken over by someone else, but according to the CPSC the safety problems still remain a concern with the company. If you have one of these products and the sides collapse, please continue to report the problem to both Simplicity and the CPSC until a recall is issued. It should not take a child being seriously injured or killed before a recall is announced to make other parents aware of the dangers of a product.
October 14, 2008 Sturdy product - great changing table, bassinet and mobile I received this playard as a gift in the spring of 2008. It ran $99-$110 at BRU (although they no longer carry it).
Pros: sturdy, mobile has lights & music, nice size changing table (my 18 pounder is still using it), bassinet is sturdy but comfortable, the hanging shelves are ok
Cons: the mobile is a little touchy with the wiring, I wish the battery compartment was in the mobile arm so I didn't have to take the entire thing off (not THAT big of a deal - but still)
We have used this playard with our twins for 6 months and I love it. I would buy another one. We have not experienced the setup problems others have encountered. Once the arms/sides were stuck as we were breaking it down, but, we popped it back up, and started over again, and the arms came down just fine. We take this playard with us each week and have no problem setting up or taking down. The mobile and changing table will not fit in the carry bag - but that is ok with us. We have used this playard/changing-table extensively as we have a multi-story home and this served us as a primary changing station and an alternate sleeping area.
Our girls LOVE the mobile. When they were old enough to actually see it, they were HOOKED on it. They could lay in the playard or changer for a long time and watch the mobile/lights/music. They still like to watch and listen to the mobile.
Once the mobile stopped playing for no reason. We contacted the Simplicity support line. I quickly reached an associate, explained the situation and a new mobile was sent as a replacement. The replacement works just fine.
I recently bought an Evenflo playard as a 2nd one to leave at grandma's. The bassinet was very thin and flimsy and makes me appreciate this playard even more.
I recommend this playard and would purchase it again.
September 29, 2008 DANGEROUS! Don't buy it! I bought it for my newborn and it is really dangerous. The sides collapse and if you have your baby on the changing table he/she can fall easily. Very poor design!
September 11, 2008 Side Collapses - DANGEROUS! We have only used the play yard for 2 months and our baby only weighs 10 pounds. We set it up/broke it down 3 times- so our problem isn't from overuse/abuse. Upon setup, the side locks into place. The last step of setup is to lower the floor. Once we do that, the side piece collapses. Interesting that it is made by Simplicity, not actually Fisher Price... and that Babies R Us and Target are no longer carrying it.
September 2, 2008 Please call Simplicity about collapsing sides!!!!!! Fisher Price does not make this product, a company called Simplicity does. If the sides of your play yard will not stay up you must call them. The representative that I spoke with, walked me through a couple of steps to determine whether or not the yard was defective. Mine was and several are. I was told that I will be sent a replacement. Just turn it over. There is a 1-800 number on the bottom. You will be asked to collapse and reset up the play yard and told if you need a new one. You will then be given instructions on what to do with the old one. Hope this helps!
August 27, 2008 Nice, but a pain at first. This is so adorable. I built it today, and what a pain!! The instructions did come with it, but it's still a litle tricky. Now that I understand how to do it, I think it will be easier to work. I find that there are little buttons to push to collapse the sides, don't try to force it. And getting the sides up in the first place IS a pain, but just make sure the middle isn't pushed down while trying to snap the sides up. I hate that you have to assemble the bassinet every time you want to use it. We wanted the seperate bassinet, but they stopped selling it Babies-R-Us & Target. It would have been great if it were one or two pieces that you have to place inside, but oh well. Still very cute!
July 25, 2008 dangerous. can collapse easily! i liked this product at first but then the sides started collapsing while my daughter was in it. even the slightest pressure on the sides would cause this to happen. it's very dangerous and i don't feel comfortable leaving her in it. also, it's very difficult to get the sides to snap back into place.
July 25, 2008 Poorly built, low-quality play yard - Could be dangerous I purchased this play yard in July of last year (2007) for my daughter who was born in August of last year. After an hour of attempting to assemble it myself and an hour of my husband attempting to assemble it, we called the manufacturer and told them that it was broken. Two of the sides would not click into place. They required us to attempt setup with their guided instructions and finally concluded that it was defective. We were shipped a second play yard after about a month.
The second play yard setup with only little difficulty. A few months later, my husband reached in to pick-up our daughter and the side collapsed. We were concerned, but were able to snap it back into place, discussed how flimsy this thing is built, and began to be very cautious with placing any weight on the sides for fear of it collapsing. (Not a great thing to have to keep in consideration for a play yard that your child plays in.)
Then last week as my almost 11-month-old daughter was in the play pen, the side collapsed as she held onto it. She's only about 11 months, so there wasn't much pressure. Her arm got stuck in the fold of the collapsed side and fortunately it only squished her arm a little. It could have been worse, but I'm glad it wasn't.
I called Simplicity today and they said the only thing they can do is send me a refund. I have to cut up the fabric to prove I destroyed the play yard (which is quite ironic because the play yard is already "destroyed" by design). I then need to package the fabric and they have scheduled pick-up by UPS. Once they receive and process the package, they will send me a refund by check in the mail. They're not sure how long it will take.
I know that some people have posted that they love this play yard. I'm glad it's working out for them and they haven't had any defectiveness or safety issues; however, I would caution against anyone purchasing this play yard as I personally wouldn't take the chance on which side of the experience you'll land on, especially when your child's safety is at risk. I know it's absolutely adorable in asthetic design (I bought just about the whole line of rainforest items), but it seems that since it's not made by Fisher-Price, but instead outsourced to Simplicity, it doesn't live up to quality standards.
For your info., if needed, Simplicity's phone number is 1-800-858-8323. They will need the model number and manufacturer's code, which can both be found on the leg of the play yard underneath it.
I will also be calling the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at 1-800-638-2772 to report the collapses. Simplicity has so far refused to recall the product. Maybe the US CPSC will.
July 19, 2008 Dangerous Product! This product is a danger to have your infant or toddler in. Not only do the sides collapse if you lean on them, they collapse if a small child pulls themselves up on the side. I tried to return mine to Toys r Us, but they wouldn't take it back. What a piece of junk and what crummy customer service!
