Whether flying on an airplane or traveling by train or bus, it is safest and most comfortable for your child to be in a car seat. But traveling with a young child, their seat, and your carry-on can be tricky. Not anymore. The Traveling Toddler strap allows you to attach your LATCH and top tether equipped toddler's car seat to a rolling carry-on suitcase. Simply attach the LATCH and top tether straps from the car seat to the Traveling Toddler and adjust the straps so that the car seat is held securely on the suitcase. Once adjusted, the car seat can be detached and reattached to the suitcase in seconds. Lift the handle of your carry-on bag and you have a fun new stroller. Now there's an easy and inexpensive way to take your toddler's car seat and other gear on your trip. You do not have to buy a special seat or suitcase. As long as your suitcase handle locks in place, you can push it like a stroller. Your hands are free for check in and its simple to unhook for security. Keep your child safe and comfortable in their own seat instead of squirming around in a seat made for an adult, or worse, squirming around on your lap. The Traveling Toddler has been tested with most major car seat brands including Graco, Eddie Bauer, Cosco, Evenflo, and Britax, and a variety of carry-on suitcases and has worked with every combination. It is important that the telescoping handle of your suitcase locks in place. If not, it might not stay extended when you try to push your child in front of you, though you would still be able to pull them. If flying, make sure that your car seat is FAA approved before traveling. The Traveling Toddler strap is made from heavyweight polypropylene webbing that will withstand 900 lbs of force. When not in use it easily slips in the pocket of your carry-on. As with any other wheeled child carrier, do not use the Traveling Toddler on stairs or escalators. Car seat and suitcase sold separately.Patent pending.
User Submitted Traveling Toddler: Car seat travel accessory Reviews August 23, 2008 Airport Security Killed This Great Idea I used this to travel from Boston to Dallas. It fit great and I was very excited to have both my child and my suitcase rolling with one hand. However, it was SO inconvenient when going through security. I had to unlatch it from the bag and then re-latch after all the hoops they make you jump through these days while holding my 9 month old. Then, when I gate-checked it, they wouldn't give me my bag back with the carseat when changing planes because "they aren't allowed to return baggage". !? Maybe it was just the airline I flew (Midwest) but I imagine it's probably similar on most airlines. So, I had to carry my baby through the airport. It would have been better to bring a real stroller and just check everything (which I did on our next trip).
So, don't do this unless you know for sure you can have it back when changing planes. If you aren't changing planes you still have to re-latch it after exiting the plane which is a pain b/c you have 200 people exiting with you and you want to bend down and configure a carseat onto a carry on bag with a baby/toddler in tow.
It was a real bummer.
August 11, 2008 Very useful for airport travel I recently traveled alone with my 2 year old son. I knew I had to bring his car seat on the plane to keep him confined, but I wasn't sure how I was going to manage him and everything else I needed on my own. This worked very well. Two problems I ran into were 1) I had to disassemble the cart seat and suitcase every time we went through a security check and 2) you need to be sure you have a durable suitcase with strong wheels and handle to support both the car seat and your child. I would reccommend this product. Happy Traveling!
July 31, 2008 Awesome! Worth Every Penny! After researching different options in which to travel with a car seat, I came across anything and everything ranging from $80 to $160, most of them being an entire car seat with wheels rather than simply an attachment to use with an existing car seat. After finding this item and reading all of the positive reviews, we tried it out; can't beat the price! Worked like a charm on our Britax Blvd. with our two year old daughter. I would suggest practicing the attachment at home and with the child before using it at the airport to alleviate any stress in figuring it out and it does need to be taken apart to go through security. We didn't try using the suitcase and the seat attached when we boarded the plane after reading some other reviews that said it didn't fit up the airplane aisle. Our daughter is on the tall end, so she did have to hold her legs up when we were pulling her and you do have to be careful with turning, doorways, and/or aisles remembering that there are appendages hanging off of your suitcase (i.e. child's feet). She loved it, and we loved it as we were able to transport her car seat, use it on the plane, and not have to deal with a stroller in the airport! Amazing purchase and highly recommended!
July 14, 2008 It would have been better if... I have to say who ever developed this product is a freaking genius and a rich [...] too. I mean it is just 2 pieces of material and 3 D rings but it cost like [...] bucks. All in all it was pretty easy to use even though out toddler didnt sit in it much. Atleast it make carring the car seat easier. I would definatly recommend this to my family and friends.
July 13, 2008 A Better Mousetrap We just test drove this product with our Britax Marathon's and this strap certainly does its job. Setup is easy. The rings at the end of the 3 way strap simply clip into the carseat's LATCH side clips and the rear top clip. The only straps that need to be adjusted are the side straps to tighten the carseat onto the luggage. Contrary to one of the few negative reviews for this item, you do not need to lay your luggage on the ground to attach the strap and the carseat. It's actually quite easy.
You will feel a bit disappointed when this item arrives. All you get is a box and a 3 way strap with D rings on each end. I'm sure this item cost less than a $1 to manufacture. That said, it does its job and this $15 strap is much cheaper than the $80 Travel Mate which only carries the carseat (rather than both the carseat and the rolling carry-on luggage) and appears to be a pain to setup and detach.
When you roll the luggage with the carseat, you will have to exert downward force on the extended handle. The outboard weight of the carseat and the Tot simply changes the balance of the luggage such that while rolling it down the terminal the luggage would rather stay upright. This is a little awkward but the ability to roll the luggage, carseat, and the Tot together more than makes up for the awkwardness.
Overall, I'm glad I found this alternative to the Travel Mate. Aengus
July 10, 2008 Single Mom Takes Toddler on Plane; Great, Simple, Device! This product took some practice but it worked great after using it a few times. I bought this product a few weeks before our trip. It arrived promptly without damage. I hooked up the car seat to our carry on, 14" x 22" x 9", and strapped my daughter in for a few strolling trips around the house. I didn't want to check any bags because they always get lost. Her stuff went in a backpack/roller suitcase. My stuff went in the carry-on. The car seat went on the carry on. The diaper bag and purse went on my shoulder. It was a lot to carry and there was some sweat but it worked great. The car seat went on the plane. So, no squirmy toddler. She was comforted by having her car seat along and felt safe during a very turbulent flight. She even said "Wheee" during the bumps. I asked to board early after 1st class/disabled and this helped. I also waited 'till everyone left the plane for the extra room needed to strap the car seat to the luggage in the aisle. Security was a nightmare but manageable. The clip got caught on the luggage corner and I had trouble getting it off. But I was a little panicked because she was having such a melt down. Allow yourself plenty of time at the airport to reduce stress - 1.5 - 2 hours. The device is easily stored in your purse along with the car seat clip and Mighty Tight. The car seat is easy to install upon arriving. I got plenty of compliments at the airport along with some questions from flight attendants who didn't understand that I was not checking the car seat. I saw another mom there who had the expensive convertible car seat to stroller. But, I felt a little smug knowing both how much money I had saved and that her device didn't carry her clothes. She obviously checked her luggage. If you are not afraid of a little extra physical work, you can travel for a long weekend with the toddler, car seat, luggage, and diaper bag, without ever paying fees to the airline for your first bag. Definitely worth the money.
July 8, 2008 So easy and small, what could be better for traveling with a toddler?! So, we were headed for California from Texas with our 17 month old and I had to bring her carseat with us...I had seen the other option where the carseat snapped or slid onto basically wheels and a handle, but it was like 80 bucks(!) and I would still have to roll any luggage we had PLUS our daughter. This product was awesome - attaching the carseat to an already existing rolling carryon was genius! It's a MUST-BUY!
July 7, 2008 Makes traveling with a baby a joy! We recently went on vacation with our 11 mnth old baby. I purchased the Traveling Toddler in preparation for the trip. I did a test run of it with my roll-aboard suitcase ( to adjust for fit ) with and without the baby installed in the carseat. The carseat that we used was a Cosco Senera. I highly recommend a dry run at home before you get to the airport. This was the one item I purchased for the trip that made traveling with the Baby Stress Free!!! It worked wonderfully. We were able to check the stroller when we checked the luggage. And we just wheeled the baby from gate to gate using the Traveling Toddler attached to the Roll-aboard suitcase (The roll-aboard suitcase I use is 21" tall). And the Baby really enjoyed the ride. A very simply design that Really Works. I Highly Recommend IT! I feel that the Traveling Toddler was worth every penny! It is the most reasonably priced travel accessory available that I have found and it works Great Too!!! I will be Recommending this to all of my Friends with babies for Air Travel.
May 21, 2008 Just good in theory Oh where do I begin? I had the worst traveling experience of my life trying to use this product. I was traveling by myself with a one year old from Bangkok to San Francisco, where we had to change planes in Tokyo. The one year old was the easy part... the hard part was getting through all of the security check points and trying to wrangle this contraption to make it work along the way. By the time I got on the first plane I was in tears.
First you have to lay your bag our on the ground to attach the seat. Then the toddler can't actually be sitting in the seat when you attach it because you need to get behind the padding and everything to guide the straps through. So you are wrestling with your roller bag on the ground while the toddler is well, toddling all over the place.
Then you get to security and have to take everything apart and do it all again.... While your toddler is roaming free, willy-nilly and everyone is looking on in disbelief at this ridiculous system you are struggling with. Next you will be lucky if you can get the bag and the car seat down the aisle of the airplane... if you can't what are you supposed to do with a 20 pound kid, a 20 pound seat, a roller bag, and the diaper bag.... more crying...
Then when you land you have to take your toddler out of the seat again and try to wrestle the whole contraption back together on the floor of the plane. Luckily we were in the bulkhead, otherwise there is no way on this green earth that you would have enough space anywhere to do this. Don't forget that the toddler has wandered off while you are trying to accomplish this feat. Not only that, but to prevent my daughter from wandering off while I was making a fool of myself with this thing I put her in a plane seat. Next thing I knew she had done a face plant on the floor and had a bloody nose, all while I was trying to use this horrible system.
Then you get off the plane, go to the next security checkpoint and do it all again. By the time I actually got off the plane (last one off every time) in San Francisco I was truly living every parents' nightmare of traveling alone with a kid. All the while my actual kid was great, but this thing really REALLY only works in theory.
It also doesn't hold things together very securely. I, like other reviewers was worried about that too.
Once I got to the hotel I wanted to have a ceremonial burning of the wretched device.... instead I "accidentally" left it under the bed. Holiday Inn near Fisherman's Wharf for those of you who thought this system worked out so good.
May 9, 2008 It's just a strap All you get is a strap. It does work, though....BUT: when you are boarding, your car seat will not fit through the aisle in the cabin. So you'll need to unstrap the car seat and carry it on board. That's the only thing I didn't like about this idea. It's great getting trough the airport, but you need to unstrap when boarding and re-strap once you get off. Overall, a good product.
